Hard call, maryjo....however, since you will be seeing your new sailor just about 2 weeks later for PIR, I think I would go with your Marine son who was deployed last year and missed Christmas totally.  Of course, it is a decision that only YOU can make.  Another suggestion....is there any way that your Marine son's family could join you in GL for Christmas with your SR and celebrate there?  I know that would be upsetting to them that they can't host your family at their place....so not sure that is an option.

Ahhh....decisions, decisions!  Your SR will be adopted out in the community and have a wonderful time with the other SRs---- served a Christma a meal, and will be able to contact you via borrowed cellphones from the lovely people hosting the SRs.  I know it is not the same as "being there" but you are kind of caught between a rock and a hard place right now!

Have you talked to your Marine son about this?

I have a little dilemma so I thought I'd ask my new Navy parent friends as well as my Marine parent friends.  We had planned to spend Christmas this year with our Marine son and daughter-in-love.  He was deployed last year and is really excited about hosting the family dinner at their place.  As you know, our Navy recruits are getting Christmas off and our son really expressed the desire that we come see him for Christmas.  What would you do?

I just wanted to say thanks for all the info, this is all new to me, out of four kids my youngest is now in boot camp, I had no idea what to expect and have had a heavy heart since Tuesday when I left him at the airport...

pamesue:  Yes, this group will be part of the Christmas Adopt a Sailor program.  Hopefully your SR will mail you the form to complete and fax back to RTC.  That will be very very special time with your SR for sure!

When my son was in Bootcamp 5 yrs ago....at this time of year, someone sent a box of Christmas goodies to him through a vendor in TX (we live in FL).  He was "grilled" by his RDCs....who sent this?  There was no card or ID in the box....he had no clue.  Thank goodness, no punishment for him....but he DID see the RDCs enjoying his box of goodies later in their office!  :-)

Yes, those with kids in college try to understand, but they don't. They don't stop to realize that they still have contact with their kids in college, not the same in Bootcamp.  The contact is totally under the control of the Navy!  It is a better during A School when contact is restored again....but still, lots of restrictions in the military that don't exist in college situations!

Kwill I know exactly how you feel,  it definitely is not the same.
