Huffmom another mom here has a daughter there and her daughter skyped her parents while at the car lot and on a test drive. I thought that was pretty cleaver.
Congrates June on your daughters achievement
Navy Fed told our son to come in the week before he comes home and get a pre-approval check to bring home with him. That would be the easiest way to do it.
HuffyMom- We are 25 minutes north of Effingham, 15 minutes south of Shelbyville. We just made 14 hour trip home last night, and it makes for a long day. There are 4 of them coming this way for Christmas, but he won't be riding back with them. I think his girlfriend is going to make the drive back with him, then fly back. I'll be a nervous wreck until they get there.
Congrats June! That's awesome!
Amanda and Tracy, we all live not too far from each other. I live about 15 minutes southeast of Springfield. I guess you two can sympathize with the long drive out to Norfolk. Wish it was 8 hours instead of 14 so that we could go visit our son more often.
These are the things we are worried about. He really wants to get a truck when he comes home for Christmas break. But we do not want to worry about him driving back for 14 hours when he heads home. It would be his luck the weather would be horrible. If he had a friend driving with him would be one thing, but alone would worry us to death.
My brother lives out there and could go with him to look at vehicles except he is in Bahrain right now. He won't get back to Norfolk until the middle of December. He did tell me the other day on the phone that if he got a contract, he was bringing it back to the base for the financial person to look at before signing anything. How very sad and disgusting that our kids are giving their life for this country, and some of these dealerships find it acceptable to rip them off. Makes me sick! That is why it would be better for him finding something here at home. We will see though. Thanks for your advice and information ladies. Have a great Thanksgiving week!
Funny you should ask about that HuffyMom23. We went to Navy Federal with our son while we were in Norfolk last week because he's planning to buy a vehicle when he comes home for Christmas and wanted to see what the process was since there isn't a branch anywhere close to us. The loan officer gave him some very good advice. She didn't even know he was wanting a truck and the first thing she said to him was that trucks are pretty and trucks are cool, but trucks are not practical for Norfolk...period. The gas and insurance alone will kill him. She also said to be very careful with dealerships out there because they know exactly how much they make and can get approved for, so they make sure they sell them the highest price vehicle they can get by with. She said they can smell a 19 year old navy boy from a mile away. Her best advice was to by late model used and don't finance for longer than 60 months.
Does anyone have any advice for safe dealerships to look for vehicles in Norfolk? My son is realizing that the motorcycle might not work the best for him all winter. He is being stubborn and wants to keep it. We are telling him to trade it for a truck. He can always get a motorcycle again when he is older. His insurance is going to kill him if he keeps the motorcycle and buys a truck.
He is interested in getting a Dodge, so wasn't sure good places he could look. I really wish we could be there to help him. I have told him to take someone older who maybe has lived there for awhile that could help him out. I just don't want him to get suckered because he is some young 19 year old. We live too far away to make a quick trip out there to help him. Marcy, I know you always have good information. :) Thanks to anyone who can help me out!
