What is holiday stand down?

Great Lakes stand down begins on Friday, December 19 this year.

There is the Navy Recruiting Holiday Stand-down, which is from close of business on 17 December 2014 to 4 January 2015 so the RTC will not receive new recruits from 12 December 2014 through 4 January 2015.

Holiday stand down also affects those in "A" School. It is the time when no training takes place. The dates for the holiday stand-down at the "A" Schools will most likely be from close of business on 19 December 2014 to 4 January 2015 for most "A" Schools. Sailors MAY be able to take up to 10 days of leave for part of the Holiday Stand-down if the command permits it. Some do and some don't.

There are no graduations from RTC during the stand down, so no.

So I'm a little confused, my daughter graduates Dec 31, even though they have the stand down going on there will still be the ceremony?

There is some overlap, it does change from year to year.  I should have said "usually".  Other years they've done graduations the same day the stand down begins.  I guess that was changed, and they have one at the tail end this year.

On a Wednesday, huh?  Must be because of the way New Years falls.

Kaila's mom, The stand down does not affect training at the RTC and New Sailors are often on HOLD at the "A" Schools for a week or more (up to several months for some "A" Schools) any time of year, so there is really nothing different about this time of year except that some Sailors MAY get to have leave if they arrive before the stand down. Your daughter will not get any Leave until after she completes "A" School since the holiday stand down ends the Sunday after she arrives.

What happens to those going from GLto GC on 12/13? Are they too new to A school to get any leave for Christmas? If they do get leave can they fly home? Is there a restriction about how far they can travel from base? I am on the west coast. Thank you for any help!

They must check in at the "A" School and the command there will let them know if they can take leave or not. If Leave will be authorized, then the Sailors wishing to take leave would need to fill out a chit requesting leave and have it approved before making any other arrangements. You can check in NUKE momsNuke School Charleston, and/or Nuke A School FAQ to see if recently arriving Sailors were able to take Leave over the holiday stand-down in the past or not. It is not the same for all commands. If Sailors are permitted to take leave, then yes, they can fly home. If they are only allowed Liberty, then that is when the mileage restrictions would come in.

So we are going to her graduation on Dec 31, does this mean she can stay with us at the hotel?   We leave on Jan 3.

She cannot stay overnight; she will have a curfew.  If her A school is not in Great Lakes, there is a good chance she will fly out on Friday, or Saturday.  She will be able to tell you more when she knows.

Kaila's mom, I left info on HM for you on your My Page. She will fly out either the first or the second, depending on flight availability.

This is the link to the official Recruit Training Command website. Under the "Family" tab, you'll find a number of sub tabs on the drop down menu. It's important that you bookmark this site and read EVERYTHING. Be sure to follow ALL the links. The site is very comprehensive. Many of your questions will be answered. Of course, if you are not sure, please post a question here and a "veteran" mom/dad will jump in.

Good luck.
