Hi Catmom and diannep - nice to "see" you again. My daughter shipped just over two weeks ago (PIR 1/9/15) so I have two kids at Great Lakes now! My son is still there for A school - flew out to see him in October - ready to have him home in December :)
This is a great sight with great information and support. Nice to meet you all...the time will go fast. It doesn't seem like it now, but it will!

NJMom:  When you call the hotels, ask them for the Navy Graduation discount since most will hold a number of rooms at this special rate.

Thanks CatMom509. I was shopping around in Expedia and yes, they ask for a deposit up front on some hotels. I will call the hotels you suggested directly. Thanks again!

Hi Claudia..I'm happy you heard from your daughter! Mine called me on Saturday as well. Very emotional. Hard for me to stay composed, but I didn't want her to hear me upset. I encouraged her to hang in there and just take it day by day. Our girls are both on the same ship and division. Are you attending graduation? Also, did she mention liberty for Xmas day to you?

All the hotels in the Great Lakes area also do not require any deposits to be paid and you can cancel up to the day of check-in.  The favorite hotels are the Navy Lodge, and in Waukegan/Gurnee (10 mins away), Springhill Suites, Courtyard Marriot, Holiday Inn Express, and Residence Inn.  There is a Super Walmart and lots of places to eat in the area. Call the hotels direct and ask for the Navy graduation rate.

Caution about the Hotels.com, Priceline, etc and similar sites is they ask for pre-payment of your hotel/car rental , etc, then if you plans change, they are not forthcoming with refunds or making changes...

Hello All!

maryjo and anyone else completing the Adopt a Sailor form for Christmas.  One of the employees who works at A School up there has a discussion.  In it, she mentioned that many are lying on the Adopt a Sailor forms to get their SRs with them for the day under false pretenses.  For instance, girlfriends/boyfriends are not allowed to adopt their sailors; wives/husbands are....parents are, not sure who else can adopt them.  Apparently some are "lying" on their paperwork for this adoption and it can get the SR in trouble.  Not saying anyone on here would do that, but beware.  They are checking and checking paperwork, this employee said, to make sure it is legit for those people to adopt the SRs for the day.  No worries for anyone....as long as you are submitting paperwork that reflects who you really are!   :-)

She also said that it may take about 30 min to get your SR off the base since so many (she said about 1800) will be leaving the base that day....many being bussed to the community events also.
