I picked up my son and another recruit for thanksgiving. We were told that the gates opened at 730, but I got there at 715 and there were already people there. Not a lot though. Dress warm. You have to wait outside for a little bit. Make sure you have your paper, id, and follow directions. We saw someone get either sent away and someone get moved to the bank for not having the paper and not following directions. Other than that, pick up was pretty smooth. There was a huge line for drop off. My son was told to be in his compartment by 730. He wanted us to leave our hotel which was about 4 miles away at 630. I thought that was a little extreme especially after how easy pick up was, but did it anyway. I was glad I did because like I said, that line was long. Some recruits were getting out of their cars and walking. That really wasn't necessary because we did end up passing them. It was real close to 730 when we dropped them off and they still had to walk to their ship. I would hope they didn't get in any trouble add there were tons of recruits behind them. As we were leaving, there were still buses of recruits coming in from what appeared to be the recruits that got adopted by churches and what not. My son has adjusted fine, but I noticed that he was depressed that day. He had adjusted to bring away, but being around us was hard. He was actually kinda depressed. That was hard. He actually felt better after we talked about it. I just reminded him that it won't be like this forever and He will have his phone and we will visit him and he will be able to visit us. It was bittersweet, but you just have to focus :/ three positives. I am so proud of him and tell him a lot!

Mattie's SR is in the 900 division.  Anyone know where they spent Thanksgiving?

Comment by diannep on November 29, 2014 at 11:55am

Mattie:  Check Recruit Training Command on FB and see if they mentioned the different places the SRs went for Thanksgiving.  That is all I know to suggest!

For those who spent Thanksgiving Day with their sailors....is there any info you can share on here that we can pass along to the PIR 12/31 and PIR 01/09 groups about the procedures to follow?  They will have Adopt a Sailor for Christmas and it probably will be very similar to what you all did.  Thanks!
