My son has applied for and just received a letter from the Congresswoman to the Naval Academy. He is finishing up basic. We will not know if he gets in until at the latest, April 15. Anyone else ever been in this situation? Just wondering what to expect.

"He is finishing up basic"

Am I getting this right: Your son applied for admission to the Naval Academy, then went and signed a contract to enlist in the Navy and is currently in boot camp? And by April will have finished boot camp and possibly A school. He may even be with the fleet.

I can tell you that being accepted to the Naval Academy as an active duty Sailor is a different process from applying while in high school. Read about it here:   http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Steps-for-Admission/Active-Duty-Serv...

Good Luck.

He applied last year while in high school, but didn't get letter. Congresswoman recommended he reapply for this year and got nomination. He has been out of high school six months. His enlistment was delayed waiting on possible NAPS placement. The Academy said to resubmit application for this year, which he did. Academy admissions has had him do some of application different since he is now in basic. Just strange situation. Will not be through with A School in April, but Academy will select no later than April.

So if he is selected the Academy will pull him straight out of the enlisted ranks for either NAPS or the plebe summer program? Strange situation indeed.

What's he doing for A school?

Nukes and yes that is my understanding of what will happen. It all seems strange but I didn't know if that was because it was or I just didn't understand the process. This is all so new to me and he seems to have a better understanding of it all then me.
Donovan has been in close contact with his naval academy admissions rep. He falls into a very grey area because he was civilian when he started the application but active duty by the time he is accepted. They instructed him to apply as a high school student, then if he is accepted he will have to go thru chain of command to ask to be released. It is extremely unlikely that he would not be released since it is such an honor to be accepted. He will go ahead and notify his command when he gets to A school.
