While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

In the event of an emergency within the sailor’s family, where you feel the sailor must be notified and considered for Emergency Leave, you must notify the American Red Cross through the national headquarters in Washington, DC (1-877-272-7337) or via their website www.redcross.org.

I've heard many of the moms say that their son is going through something similar to what your son is feeling. Mine even has a little bit of an issue. When I think back to when I was his age though, I remember that I was a little disillusioned when I first went to work full-time. I think that feeling is complicated by the fact that they feel a little trapped by their commitment (like they're being forced to stay in their job). Seems like most of them get a little happier once they get a little more mature, settle in and get a little seniority and experience, usually after a couple of years. I hope my son does as well.

Comment by HuffyMom23 on February 4, 2015 at 10:18pm: I am curious about something. Is it common for the kids to sometimes not be real happy the first few years in the Navy? I think my son is doubting his decision for joining the Navy. He has only been in for 1 1/2 years. His father and I know that he is going to come out of the Navy with a world of knowledge that he wouldn't have gotten any other way. BUT, I still feel like he is down sometimes when we talk to him.

Next year he will be overseas for a couple of years. He is in a decent job now, but this was never the area he wanted to join the Navy for. I think that is the main problem. Now he is just trying to make the best of it, but I know he is frustrated some days. Makes me sad!

All he ever talked about was joining the military and now he isn't happy. I have had co-workers tell me they didn't really enjoy the first few years either. So maybe that is common for some kids. He is going to be 20 this month. He joined soon after graduating high school.

Virginia Beach, VA: MWR Navy Getaways is offering reservations for 20 units comprising two-bedroom and three-bedroom townhouse-style cottages along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Beginning February 2015, these units will be available for reservations via Navy Getaways online and phone central reservations system. Active duty, Reservists, Retirees, and DoD civilians may find these properties by searching www.dodlodging.net or by calling the central reservation system at 1-877-NAVYBED (628-9233).

Our son is going to be living off base with one of his roommates from Ballston Spa so he's going to be very busy getting situated and learning his way around town. They will have 5 days to get everything done before they have to report to their ships. As for now, he's enjoying a well earned vacation and seeing family and friends.

Tracy PPV housing is like what doubletrouble said. It is for single sailors only and is NOT coed. The guys have their own complex and the gals have their own. I think they have to apply separately from the process for barracks. It is a great compromise between paying for private housing and living in a barracks.

I just wanted to let you know that my husband and I invite sailors over to our house on the weekends, to eat, and play board games and of course watch football! :) Sunday is Superbowl and we will have many over for that as well. If your son is interested in joining us I can pm you our cell number so he can get in touch with us. or we can contact him if he's okay with that.

Comment by doubletrouble on January 26, 2015 at 2:54pm: Tracy, PAT housing is free housing. My son qualified for it when he got back from deployment in October. His is an apartment complex off base & is fully furnished. He shares the apartment with another sailor, they are assigned so they don't know who they share with. He said they have a common kitchen & living area then each have their own room with bathroom.
He is liking it so far.
