Yes, its called the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Read about it HERE.

BTW, the below paragraph is very important. I'm wondering if anyone knows who qualifies for the match? I would suggest to anyone qualifying, to at least contribute the matching amount. The matching portion is what is known in the investment biz as "free money".....

The matching contributions apply only to amounts contributed from basic pay and not from any incentive pay or special pay. If you do not contribute basic pay to the TSP, you will not be eligible to receive matching contributions. Matching contributions apply to the first 5 percent of pay that you contribute each pay period. Your contributions are matched dollar-for-dollar on the first 3 percent of pay you contribute each pay period and 50 cents on the dollar for the next 2 percent of pay.

Special Note: Matching contributions have been authorized by ;the Department of the Army as a Pilot program for new recruits. Your service will notify you if you are eligible to receive matching contributions.

TTBOMK there have been no matching contributions since 2010.

Yes, the only thing I could find about matches was related to this...

Federal Employees' Retirement System (FERS)

The term "FERS" refers to the retirement system for Federal civilian employees who were hired on or after January 1, 1984. FERS refers to the Federal Employees' Retirement System, the Foreign Service Pension System, and other equivalent Government retirement plans.

They do have a matching plan option.

Yeah, civilian federal employees get matching funds. Sailors have the matching option at discretion the SECNAV, but there is no money specifically set aside in the Navy budget. So, no matching funds.

Thank you for this.
Be well

My DEPper has already set up a saving account and checking account.  Can he set this up early or does it have to be done at boot camp?

Many Sailors wait to boot camp and then sign-up with Navy Federal. My daughter stuck with her civilian bank account. Just make sure that he takes his account information to boot camp so he can set up the direct deposit of his pay.

From the DEP START guide:

"You are highly encouraged to open an account with a local financial institution prior to departing for RTC. All financial institutions have the Standard Form 1199A Direct Deposit Sign-up Form and will assist you in completing the form properly. This form is to accompany you to RTC. If you do not have a bank account prior to shipping to RTC you will have the opportunity to open an account at various financial institutions once you arrive."

To all, speaking of Navy Credit Union, once your sailor joins, you also have the benefit of being able to join the Credit Union. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Not only are they very easy to deal with when applying for a loan, but their rates for loans tend to be lower than anywhere else. Their interest rates paid on accounts also tend to be higher than most others found.

Not only can you now join, but once you do, your brothers, sisters, children, parents can join as well. This is a great benefit to pass on to other family members.

My husband still uses NFCU from when he was in boot camp in 1977.  We do have a local account also, but Navy Fed has been terrific.
