Linda - what boat is your son on? My son's boat is in dry dock in VA, and will be traveling to GA for a ride-a-long to work on his quals.

We did not attend BESS graduation. My son said there wasn't much to it. My sailor is MM weapons. He spent about 6 months in Groton. We did make a trip to see him for a week in oct and enjoyed our time with him. He is now stationed in Kings bsy and will be going out on his first patrol in a few months. Hope he will achieve his Dolphins on his first patrol. According to him it is a large qual packet. Good luck to your sailor.

Hi Charles Mom! Congratulations on your sailor! BESS is about 8 weeks - however, when that 8 weeks starts depends on if there are enough to fill a class. You will have more communication with your son, so he will be able to tell you. That being said, I had to bug my son for the date!

Depending on his rate, there will be more schooling afterwards. Most are in Groton. Mine like Shea's son was sonar. After BESS he had ATT Techno then A school. He arrived Dec 7, 2013 and left October 24, 2014 - so it was almost a year!

He is now about to make his first underway. Good luck to you and your son!

Hello Charlesmom.  From what I gather the graduation from BESS is considerably smaller than PIR so some parents don't attend unless they live close.  If memory serves they know fairly early on once they class up when it will be but bear in mind things can always get delayed/changed in the military for various reasons.   We did not get to attend BESS as we live quite far from Groton but PIR is not to be missed if at all possible.  It is amazing.  Hopefully you'll get some more responses that will help you decide.  What is your son's job going to be?  Mine is a sonar tech.  He has been stationed in Hawaii for the last 2 years and is currently deployed.

Hello all! I am new to the group. My son's PIR is next Friday and he will be heading to BESS afterwards. I see that there is a graduation from BESS. Can anyone tell me if they are in BESS for 8 weeks? How long does it take before they find out graduation dates? I want to attend and trying to figure out the planning of trip.

Hello all! My son just finished his chool in Groton, and is headed to USS North Carolina in HI. Any helpful advice about this base or the sub will be most appreciated. =)
