Mine had this weekend off and drove to NC to snowboard, glad he had time to blow off some energy.

Thanks girl chief for the birthday wishes.  I hope your sailor had a good birthday too!

Mark - Thanks for all the great information. Its a good description of what he will expect when he finally gets out to the fleet.  I had heard a little about this from my husband and my son.  My son is in A school but I assume the watch duty is the same for Power School.  My son and I talked about what it will be like in the fleet.  Being a nuke MM, he knows he will have lots of duty and watches while in port.  Its part of the deal.  I think he is just bummed its his birthday and he is still adjusting to this schedule.  He will do just fine though.  I know he can do it.

Lilo54, the duty watch rotation in Power School is relatively easy compared to what it will be in the fleet.  I can't speak for carriers, but on submarines nucs typically will be on four, sometimes three section duty when in port.  Four section duty means that the crew is divided into four equal size groups with people in each section to cover all the necessary watches.  Each day, a different duty section will have duty and cover required watches for the 24 hour period.  This means duty every fourth day while in port, regardless of weekends or holidays.  On a duty day, an individual will typically be assigned two four-hour watches during the 24 hrs.  Everybody on the boat is required to put in the standard workday (which can vary, but is usually 7:30-4:00).  At four pm, the three duty sections not on duty that day are then on liberty until muster time the next workday, while the duty section stays aboard covering watches and other work.

Lilo-Happy 21st Birthday to your Sailor! ⚓
Comment by Lilo54 on March 1, 2015 at 1:09pm

So today is my son's 21st birthday.  I sent him a text at midnight wishing him a happy birthday.  This morning at 5:30am I got a message that said  - up for morning colors at 8AM, then watch for 5 hours and then study for 6 hours.  It was not very enthusiastic!   I hope he had fun on his time off.  Wow, not the way I was hoping he would spend his birthday.  I knew he had to study but he had watch a week ago on Saturday night.,  How often do they have watch!   I guess, this is good to prepare him for the future on the sub!   But, poor guy, this is a milestone bday.  I guess he will have to wait until next weekend to celebrate!  Wish I could be there tool  Hopefully he will call this evening!

Many of the apartments around the area rent short term.  Tell them to rent the furniture as they don't know where they will be assigned or what the living spaces will contain. They may be deployed as soon as they arrive.

When I was there for graduation, many sailors were checking in at the motel that night.

Ahhh what to do about those procrastinators? God didn't want to be burdened with task of keeping them in line, so he gave them helicopter moms.

I forwarded all your birthday greetings to my daughter's email. She said to tell all the moms "thank you."

Dittersmom, If you find out what to do to get your son not to procrastinate, let me know. My son is the same way!
