Let's chat about our wonderful sons and daughters who have chosen the PACT program.

Hello

It has been a long time since I have posted and I am sorry. I hope everyone has been able to connect with others in the PACT program. My son is now 3 and a half years in and it has been a great experience. He thought he wanted to be an AM. When he got on the ship, he was put with the AO’s. Now he is an AD3. It was best for him to start PACT because we didn’t know much about the Navy and he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. This has been a good route for him.

My sailor Skype's when in port, as it just depends on what country on the charges of phone calls with Verizon, in the gulf it's $3 a minute...I'll have to check out dingtone., as my sailor can be chatty....most of the time we email from the carrier and calls every once and a while from the boat.

Hey Ladies..

So sorry to not post this earlier as many of u asked, I was down with the flu...yucky stuff...

Power of Attorney is very important for single sailors.  Here is a link to a general  POA set up by the Navy:

Vickie360 - i'm in the same boat as you (no pun intended) as my sailor will also be deploying soon. I went to our carrier (Sprint) and they said something about "unlocking" her iphone and then she would be able to buy a sim card and put that in her phone to use. I guess the sim card has a value to it and whatever that is, is how many minutes or date you can use it for and then once that is done you can either reload it or get a new one. When i go see her we are going to take care of that so that she has it all taken care of before she deploys.

nvduhmom - i haven't heard of "dingtone" but i'll look into it. Thanks!

Vickie360  My son will be leaving on deployment soon as well.  He "deactivated" his cell phone and will only pay $5 per month while he is gone.  There is free app that he got called "dingtone" which will allow him to make calls from anywhere with no charge. My husband, daughter and I are already setup.

Vickie360...where is your son going? Austin leaves in a week for deployment
Comment by Vickie360 on March 4, 2015 at 12:30am
I've asked several moms and I am trying to figure out all the options about phones and deployment.. Should we get an "interntional plan" on his existing phone or should he get a "pay as you go" phone...If he takes his phone, what should he turn off so we don't get all kinds of charges? If he uses the ship's phones, do they have access to it often? Should he take his computer on the ship? I have so many questions about how we will communicate while he is gone and how we should pay...

Yes!! Your feelings are normal!!! My problem now is that I find myself wanting to "wait" on everything with the family until my son can be there. I am slowly realizing that we all have to move ahead. I think we will all get used to our new normal over time.

Awesomemom. I think your feelings are normal. I have emotions all over the place. My daughter goining the Navy was a complete surprise to all of her family. It is so hard to let go.

We took my son's to him at the airport because he was flying to Florida. We are paying about $15 a month for wifi so he doesn't have to go find an available computer. I'm not sure if it is the same in GL...

Beachbunny. ..my son is actually at Mayport right now waiting to leave for deployment. This Thursday will be his 19th bday. ...I was wondering about having cookies or cupcakes delivered to him but don't know if that's allowed or if it would be too embarrassing. ...I know you're not in mayport, but thought the protocol might be the same. Any thoughts? ??
