Thanks William & NancyJo!  Glad to hear that  BAH continues while deployed.  It makes sense but I didn't know for sure - and didn't think to ask my son.  It's often quicker to get a response here than from him LOL!

B'sNukeMom if a sailor is receiving BAH he will continue to receive it regardless of whether or not his ship is deployed.

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on March 2, 2015 at 2:12pm

I only know from a married sailor's perspective that BAH continues. I can't imagine how they couldn't b/c you have to have a place for your stuff. Does it all go into storage otherwise? I might be making a stupid assumption but what else is new?

Hi all - Happy Monday!

Had a nice chat with sailor yesterday.  He got checked in to his ship (& by ship I mean carrier!).  Because of the weather issues there were some delays with his access pass so he hasn't really done much yet.  He's happy that the commute from his apartment isn't too bad (apt is in VA Beach & ship is in Portsmouth) but he said the walk in from the parking lot to the ship is 20 minutes!  The place is huge LOL!  There's a few guys from NY that are also on the same ship so they can carpool which makes it nice.  He did mention something about his work schedule being M-F (6am until 3 or 5 or whenever they are done?) and every 4th day they have to stand a 24 hour watch - and they have to stay on the ship for that watch period.  He also talked about underways they will go on to prepare for deployment. (He didn't reveal anything top secret so we are good on that!).  This is going to be interesting learning about this next phase - especially deployments!

Does anyone know if they continue to get their BAH when they are on deployment?  They have a 1 year lease on their apt.....

Hello all!

Thanks Mark!  My son is in port and he sometimes mentions duty day.  At least I get a better picture of what it is.  He doesnt talk shop at home much.lol

Thanks Mark. Very interesting, "skimmers" and "targets". Gosh, I feel like I've gotten so lazy, finding information. I know that I can come here and ask anything. Instead of just doing the research myself. Lol I do appreciate the shared knowledge and the time you take to share it though.

Otter...LOL my nuke son has the nick name in our family as the otter. Gary Smalley characterized different personalities with animals, the one hat like to have fun and party is the otter. He can procrastinate just cause it interferes with him having fun.

I thought the navy would kick that out of them? no?

Comment by Mark on March 1, 2015 at 5:37pm

britefuture - the link I found below makes a pretty good case, IMHO.  I'd add that there seems to be a little less of a distinction these days.  It's not unheard of for submariners to call it a "ship", and a little less unheard of for a carrier sailor to refer to the carrier as a "boat" in casual conversation...e.g, "I'll be heading back to the boat in a little bit."
