Hi all...my sailor started Power School on 11/24 and I'm wondering if anyone else has a sailor in the same group. He's asked for the grad date a gazillion times and can't get an answer. I know that's the way it goes, but I'm hoping someone else has heard something. I plan to attend and would really like to start making travel arrangements. More importantly, I need to make sure I get the time off!

I'm probably a year behind in this process. My son will start OCS upon graduation from college then has power and prototype to attend. I was kind of under the impression parents attend OCS graduation and that was pretty much it. Not so??? Or does it depend upon how close you are to the schools?

freckles1218 - I'm not familiar with OCS, but A School, Power School and Prototype all have graduations. I'm in CA so I didn't make it to the A School graduation, but I'm going to the one for Power School. We'll see about Prototype...it's pretty expensive to fly from CA to SC.

Yes, you attend OCS graduation as it will be one of the biggest things to happen during his career in the Navy. Newport, RI is absolutely beautiful and you will have a great time. Power school and prototype graduations, you can definitely go to as well. If needing to choose - definitely OCS, then power school (it's a bigger graduation, more "formal"), then prototype.

BlancheMarie, I hope you don't mind - I sent you a friend request because I'd like to ask you some specific questions. I don't know the parents of any of my son's classmates (is that what you call them?), so it would be cool to have that connection with someone. :)

Hi BlancheMarie, my son is in the class that will graduate on May 15th. We are making flight arrangements right now and wondering if there are any other activities to watch/participate in before that Friday graduation? Have you heard anything in regard to this?

BlancheMarie and MarDel, my son and I did the math and confirmed 5/15 so I went ahead and made all my reservations today. So excited!! The only other info he's received is that there isn't a limit to the number of guests but only 2 can get seats - the others have to stand. Maybe between the 3 of us we'll be able to scrape all the info together!

Our son is also graduating 5/15 from Power School.  We haven't made an reservations yet. Driving there so I am rally looking forward to the drive and seeing Charleston.  any hotel suggestions?  He put in for Ballston Spa and said only one other person in his class did that he knows of.  He wants to travel!

Hi KathieinFL - I've seen many recommendations over the past year about places to stay, but darned if I remember any of them! I sent you a friend request so we can chat more about details...it's great to find another mom with a sailor in the same class.

Hi ScampsMom-nice to meet you too.  I did find 2 threads that had info on sight seeing and Hotels.  I can email you my list-I consolidated it.  How is your son doing?  Mine is doing much better than I expected.  He seems to be tolerating the way too many hours they have to study.  But I keep telling him it's like college-maybe being a doctor!!  Ours is a MM which was not what he wanted but he's making do.  Looking forward to chatting.

Hi KathieinFL - Thank you so much! I actually already made reservations, but I didn't want to post the name of the hotel...just trying to be extra vigilant for security's sake. I haven't looked into sight-seeing stuff yet, though, so I'll send you my email address in a message.

My son is an EM and seems to be doing really well. He puts in extra time studying, which is interesting because he always did just enough to get by in school (we all knew he could do better!). He's become very competitive and wants to do well.

I'm anxious to find out where he'll be doing Prototype. We won't be flying back home until the 21st, so I'm hoping that if he has to go to BS, he'll have time to spend with us first. He has a car so I'm assuming he has to drive it there...if so, I sure hope he'll have someone to go with him. That's a long drive!
