Fair winds and following seas!!  

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- More than 4,000 Sailors and Marines from the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (KSGARG) and 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (26 MEU) departed from Norfolk and Little Creek, Virginia and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Oct 6.

The deployment is part of a regular rotation of forces to support maritime security operations, provide crisis response capability and increase theater security cooperation while providing a forward naval presence in the U.S Navy's 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.

The KSGARG is commanded by Capt. Augustus P. Bennett, commodore, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 4 and is comprised of the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), the amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24), both homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, and the amphibious dock landing ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), homeported at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia.

"The ARG/MEU team has done an excellent job going through the intensive and rigorous training cycle that has successfully prepared us for our deployment," said Bennett. "The hard work and dedication of every Sailor and Marine will allow us the ability to excel at any mission or situation that comes before us."

The 26th MEU is commanded by Col. Robert C. Fulford and consists of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Command Element, the Ground Combat Element, Battalion Landing Team, Aviation Combat Element, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron, Logistics Combat Element and the Combat Logistics Battalion.

The KSGARG/26 MEU team will provide combatant commanders a versatile sea-based force that can be tailored to a variety of missions, including quick reaction crisis response options in maritime, littoral and inland environments in support of the nation's maritime strategy.

Here's a heads-up for those who bank with Navy Federal Credit Union, posted today by Naval Operational Security (OPSEC) -

Be aware of a spear phishing campaign targeting users with a Navy Federal Credit Union account. There are multiple senders and the subject line of the malicious emails vary, but appear similar to "Account Alert," "NFCU Notification," "Notification Alert," or "Account Notification." The email contains an attachment that links to a phishing page.

OPSEC Best Practices: Verify links and sources of emails.

Even if a ship is stateside, I've heard some post offices will ask for it - frustrating.  If they insist and you can't get around it, not to worry, the customs form is simple.  

Just fill out the "From" section with your info, the "To" section with your sailor's name and the FPO address.  Be sure to use the nine-digit ZIP code, if you only use five-digit ZIP it will be returned to you.  Just write it in the lines, the FPO address doesn't conform to the spaces for city, state, zip etc but don't worry about it, they accept it any way you enter it. 

Then list the items, the number of each, and approximate value.  You don't need to be super-specific.  For example - Snacks……..3………….$10.00

Personal hygiene items…….2………$15.00

Total it up, mark the box at bottom "gift", sign and date.  To the right at the bottom, there is a section with several options under "If non-deliverable."  I always check the box "Redirect to" and write in "Deliver to ship chaplain" and figure they'll find him or vice versa.  Fortunately, I have never had a box not delivered to my sailor on a ship  :)  This is what the form looks like (at least, before the update with the sender's phone) so you get an idea:
