My daughter went to MEPS last month with the intention of signing up as a CS. They told her there wasn't an opening and was talked into signing for EM, with a ship date of 9/1. She was told that she could change her rate, and her recruiter put the paperwork in to do it. Now 4 weeks later, still no word on the rate change. I am worried they will try to force her to ship as an EM, a job she doesn't want and I know that she will not be happy in. Anyone have any insight?

She needs to have her recruiter put in a DEP Action Request (DAR) to attempt to get a contract with her desired rating and it appears that has been done. There is no guarantee that she will get the desired contract and no set amount of time that it could happen in because the Navy doesn't open up the positions, someone has to not be able to ship in order for her to get the contract. If someone with a CS contract with a ship date near or before hers is unable to ship for some reason (dropped out of DEP, injury, accepted a different contract, etc.), then she may be offered the contract and will have to accept it upon getting the call because someone else may also be wanting it and if she hesitates the opportunity could be lost to another future Sailor. Some have had several weeks or months and some just a few days notice before the new ship date. If that doesn't happen then she will ship with her current contract in September.

Rate = pay grade (rank for other branches)

Rating = job or occupational specialty

Thank you for the reply and the info. Her recruiter said that if she doesn't get CS rating by her ship date that she won't have to ship as an EM still. She can drop out and then reenter DEP? This is the part I Dont really understand. Also, if she gets "the call" and is unable to answer, because she is still in school, then will they just skip her? Does this call from the recruiter or someone else? I'm sure you can tell that I am not very good with the jargon yet. Lol

Yes, she can drop out of DEP and reenter, but then she starts all over from square one at MEPS (or maybe square 2 since her ASVAB should still be good) and they still may not have the contract she wants and she will have to get a waiver for having dropped out of DEP and she may not be able to join. If she does drop out of DEP and does try again, then she should hold off if she is offered a contract she does not want and keep going back to MEPS and not enter DEP with a contract she considers undesirable. It is not a good idea to be set on only one rating though because there may not be any openings for a while.

She could end up being very happy if she ships with her current contract. Others have shipped with a contract that they didn't think they would like and have been pleasantly surprised.

I believe that it will be her recruiter who will call her with the offer of the new contract. I know of at least one recruiter who has gone to school to talk with a future Sailor when a new contract became available during the school day. I don't know if all recruiters do that though.

All of this info is very helpful, thank you. At least I know to tell her not to put off the decision and accept it right away. We will deal with the rest if it comes to that.

You are very welcome. I hope that she does get the call and that the date is a good one for her.

When my son went to MEPS he had to take his 3rd choice because 1 & 2 didn't have openings. His recruiter submitted a DAR for his 1st choice. When the time came, he was notified by his recruiter that his 1st choice was being offered. He took it of course :D

mommaH,

How long before his original ship date did he get the 1st choice offer? Did his ship date get moved up with the change? It is rough, for me, not knowing when her ship date will be.

I know that one. Her future Sailor entered DEP last summer and had an original ship date of 8 July. He was offered his current contract and ship date of 25 June in late September or early October.

That is what happened for her future Sailor, but each situation is different. There is no way to know how it will work for your future Sailor.

Yep that is exactly what happened with mine. Whew what a memory you have lemonelephant. :) I was very surprised to find that he was going to ship sooner when he got the new rate. I thought for sure since it was a change that I would have had more time. (Wishful thinking there I'm sure!) I agree, MommaK, it is rough not knowing. I think that will be one of the most difficult things about all of this.

Not a good memory, it's all on your My Page, which by the way shows how easy it is to track comments. You have some changes to make.
