I want to get my son a new cell phone. Is there a recommended cell phone provider for those deployed on subs? My son will be on a boomer which I've heard doesn't get shore leave so I'm not sure he would use it or bring it.  Even for those who do get shore leave, is it better to get calling cards?  Are cell phone useful in ports (other than U.S. ports)?

One year ago today we took our son to the recruiters to send him off to MEPS to swear in as a sailor. What a year for him. First time living away from home. First plane ride. Saw snow for the first time. Moved to three different states and currently on his first patrol. Amazing year I could not be prouder of his decision to serve. Happy first Anniversary to my son can't wait to see what your future holds. Thankyou for taking your mom along for the ride.

My son is just getting ready to start A school for ET. He's already signed for sub. Too soon to join here? I want to learn all I can about sub life.

SO-TwinSalorsMom - even if you forget to change your email to plain text - the sub does that automatically.  I don't remember if it's when you send the first one to your sailor or when he sends the first one to you but you'll get an attachment from the sub explaining how the mail is handled at the sub and also in that email it explains how when the email is received by the sub it's automatically reformatted.  They take out the paragraphs and it's just one long message.  So cool when you get them!!

Cybergrouch -- my son's Prototype roommate is on the Bremerton as a Nuke MM. I believe that ITS would fall under a non-nuke ET rate in the above sticky for Meet the Crew, but I'd sure want to hear Mark's take! Lol

My son will be ITS on the HM Jackson in July when he graduates F school. I looked at the Meet the Crew but ITS (Information Technician Submarine) is not listed.  Does anyone know where he be in the hierarchy? Anyone else's loved one heading for Bremerton?

As always, Mark, thank you for the wealth of information you have provided over the past 3 years for me and countless other Navy moms on here. I figured there must be some reason some go to S.C. and some dont but had no idea about the 3 different type. I love my son dearly but suffice it to say he is never a wealth of information even when sometimes giving me some of that info could benefit him still no, lol. Thank you Mark!
