N4M's Community Guidelines
and
OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Has anyone from 198 or 197 gotten a call today?

I very much agree with what CatMom posted below about protecting the security of your SR and beyond.  Although social media is a Godsend for families/friends of service members, it can be quite a headache and risky for the armed forces/security of our country when used the wrong way.

Good Morning All....have a great weekend!

And--- you are very welcome, Jessie!

Thank you Catsmom for the security reminder. I didn't even think of that. Hoping for longer letters next time. :o)

Thank you DianneP!!! My SR was working two jobs while DEP and saving money and I know he had quite a bit in the bank when he left, he wants to be independent, but wanted to be sure he was able to use it for a card!

Comment by CatMom509 on April 25, 2015 at 3:37am

Momof9,

All of your SR's letters to you will become precious momentos no matter how long they were~~  Warms my heart to read that he went to Chapel!!  My Sailor daughter is a strong Christian, but didn't make it a point to attend, so I was definitely disappointed in that...

No video games at all during Holiday schedule on Sunday morning where they can go to Chapel, take a longer shower, shine boots, stamp clothes, tidy up their barracks, and write letters.  My daughter managed to sneak time on other days after lights out to write.....

Defnitely Boot Camp is both for our SRs and us--we have to get used to them not being around and having no or sporatic communication.  Also, for us families to be security minded and not share all sorts of info about ourselves and what our SRs are doing on open and public forums--here and on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  Too many strangers who your really don't know for sure, for sure.....  When you do hit it off with another mom, then your can Friend each other and talk more via private messaging, which can't be seen from here.  We are all learning about what it means to be Navy families and our responsibilites for our children's and nation's safety~~

Also, Jessie, feel free to mail him a phone card....it will save him some money!  :-)  Also, SRs are great about sharing their cards with others when they get to make a call and the SR hasn't gotten a card yet.  So hope you get a call in the near future!

Comment by diannep on April 24, 2015 at 11:50pm

Jessie:  He also was issued a supply card when he arrived at Bootcamp which he can use to buy supplies, including phone cards, at the NEX.

You are very welcome, Dorothy!

My son has his debit card and plenty of money in the bank. Will he be able to buy calling cards while at boot camp? He didn't take any with him. I'll be bummed if I miss out on this phone call, dying to hear how he's holding up!! Thanks!
