OK Sub moms - got a question- I sent an email to my son who is on a sub using the email from the one he sent me, and it was returned - No valid recipients. I had successfully sent emails to him before. Has this happened to anyone? I am a bit concerned.

My son is on a Boomer and was not allowed to use any electronic device until he got his Dolphins. He has been on three underways, and the only communication has been occasional emails. They are VERY busy working on quals during first deployment, so there is no time for it anyway. He puts his cell phone service on military suspension during deployments which saves him quite a bit of money since he can't use it anyway. He is now allowed to take a laptop or tablet, but this all depends on the command. One thing I've learned since he's been in the Navy is just when I think I have it all figured out, I quickly realize that I'll never have it all figured out:-)!

They just get Burner phones with a set amount of money. The call comes in with about 15 digits.

Yes, I would think with wi-fi he can Skype or FaceTime.  He's ITS so he should be the first to know if the network is up or down (after the captain). His Kindle has wi-fi and Skype. Probably should load him up with books and games to pass the time (although I don't know if he'll have much free time).

I think it really depends on the command. My son is on a fast attack and just got back from deployment. He had his iPhone with him but used an app or something like that that allowed him to call on his phone even though he'd turned it off as long as he had wifi. We could also FaceTime if he was connected to wifi. Fast attacks port several times during deployment so it was nice to hear from him. He was also allowed to have his computer. It may also depend how far they are in their quals as to what they can bring. The further along they are the more privileges they get.

I heard a rumor that there were plans only through the NEX that does not charge the monthly fee while they were "out to sea".  Has anyone heard of this?

My son is on a fast attack and his phone is off during deployment.

cybergrouch, my son is on a boomer and they can't use a cell phone while they are underway. They do not go into ports, so no need for a phone while they are out. You can send and receive emails. I don't even think my son takes his phone with him when he is on patrol.

Lots of time the guys purchase a throwaway one with xx amount of minutes when they are in port.

It may be that they will not be allowed to have a cell phone while deployed. It may be best to let him figure out what to do.
