Hi barb_a! My sons first deployment was also in 2013. He's had a very good experience on both the GW and in Japan. He's looking forward to this upcoming deployment. He will not be returning to Japan and is ready to start a new adventure!

I wish this group would be more active too.  It was such a great help to me when my daughter first went to Japan and then out to sea with the GW is 2013.  It helped make up for all the times I didn't hear from her and I learned a lot by just reading other moms' posts.

Katiegc - How long has your fiance been in Japan?  I'm going to assume recently or at least in the last few months and this upcoming deployment is his first?  Being stationed overseas can be quite overwhelming, especially at first.  It's a different culture and a lot of new things to learn.  Your fiance is probably very busy right now with quals too.  After our sailors get out of school and head off to their first command many of them are trying to "find" themselves and adjust to the Navy life.  I always feel for the wifes/girlfriends, I think it must be much harder for you to deal with the separation.  Be patient with him.

Hi Katiegc!

They can use ship-to-shore calling cards to call home.  Our Sailors work very hard and the hours are long while on deployment so you probably won't hear from him nearly as much as you'd like.  My son only calls me when they stop for a port visit but we keep in touch through emails.  Be sure to get your fiance's ship email address if he hasn't given it to you yet. Also, get ready to send care packages.  They all love getting packages from home!
