Tom & Joniana, My son is also headed up to Ballston Spa in mid-May.  I would like to pick your brain too for housing information.

Hello Tom, I seem to recall that you are in the rental business in Ballston Spa.  If that's correct, my son and several friends are looking for something mid-May.  I've put in a Friend request to you.  My thanks.

I like that J's/S'smom - I also like your advice for PacNWmom. :)

Hey Everyone! I'm fairly new here, and don't often comment, but follow along pretty consistently. I really appreciate all the help and support. Y'all are great!

My son has been at GC for about a month now. I just found out this morning that a cousin's son was killed in a car accident last night. He is not closely related to my son by blood, but his mom is one of my best friends (though we live 3000 miles apart) and we have visited them on many occasions. I know he won't get leave to attend the funeral (I read the "Emergency Messages Via Red Cross" page) but I'm wondering if I should tell him at all. My gut says yes. What do y'all think?

NonnaB - sounds like you are having a fabulous weekend! Enjoy your sailor and family especially those grandchildren!

PattiP - sounds like a good idea to send provisions to our sailors when out to sea. Anyone wish to Share their wisdom on shipping. Containers used, what service they found best most cost effecient for shipping. Most requested items. how long does it usually take to get to them etc. Thanks

Surprise visit from my son and family after a little excursion under the sea. He just happened to luck into make your own pizza on the grill; there is no boat food that can top that! And, in a few hours, he will be having deluxe Sunday pancakes made by his Dad. And he gets to take home some freshly made meatballs and sauce. But the best part of this weekend was that I got to see my two beautiful grandsons and their amazing Momma!

The food can vary quite a bit from boat to boat, but on the average, it's quite a bit better on submarines compared to surface ships.  The cooks on a submarine spend a lot more time with non-cooks since the crews are so mush smaller, and everyone bunks in the same areas for the most part. Usually, the effect is that the cooks care more - plus submarines have a higher supply priority, so they can get better raw ingredients.  Sometimes odd things can make a difference on the boat.  I recently talked to someone who got out a year or so ago, when the Navy was cracking down on sailors with weight issues - discharging them (honorably), except for waivers in some specialties (nucs, for instance).  Anyway, on his boat they got rid of all the cooks but the skinny ones - so the food went south for quite a while.

britefuture - My husband and I saw the same show last night about food on the USS Kentucky.  We were impressed at how they store all that food.  Of course, my husband said that the Kentucky is the large submarine.  Quite a different story on the small attack boats!  But, regardless of size of the boat or ship, the Navy makes sure all their sailors are well fed!!!!

Hey my son went to the movies last night and said there were 3 guys in front of him that turned around and said "what the hey, I-----, What are you doing here?" they all graduated from Power school together, the 3 went to Prototype in BS, mine finished in GC. Funny.
