LOL Beth W. Great way to start the day - a DARE! Let's see who steps up. You just pipe up any time and best of luck to your sailor.

Hi MOMS (and Dad's!) I've been lurking here for well over a year & now that my Sailor has entered the Nuke pipeline (about to class up for A school) I thought I'd say HEY (feel like a dork trying to talk to the cool kids!)Your knowledge has been SO helpful & put me at ease so many times I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU. Looking forward to getting to know all of you better. Coming out of the shadows now! My Sailor has only been at GC for a few weeks but has managed to get a ton of "quals" done before he actually starts school next week. We've sent him two "if it fits, it ships" boxes from USPS and in a few weeks we will bring him his truck, desktop, cowboy boots, guitar and as much of my pepper jelly as I have ("mom, I NEED it"). So, now that I'm out of the shadows I want to double-dog DARE other lurkers to join me with the cool kids and hang out!

Sorry for your loss Brightfuture.  Prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

We went through the legal stuff, like will and such, but should have had a few more things in place before sailor was deployed.  I had POA with the bank, but should have done it with a lawyer so everything was covered.  We had issues with insurance changes and payments.

On a different note, I am still waiting to hear from Rhonda K about the sun catcher she won.  Bestie4dogs yours is in the mail.

Sorry for the sudden loss of your aunt Brightfuture. Hope you get your sailor notified.

Someone on another group recommended drinking coconut milk also helps sunburn, did not know that, I know rubbing a cold constituted black tea bag works.

Britefuture so sorry for your loss, Tom good advise my husband and I talk about it but have not put our plan on paper. Something we don't want to think about, but must.

I had posted the "Single Sailor Deployment Checklist" to the right in the pages.  Make sure to print that out & pass on to your sailor's before deployment!

Britefuture - I hope the ombudsman is able to help.

Definitely good advice by Tom to get a plan in place!  My sailor will be deploying later this year so I will put together a check list of items to discuss with him.  We did the POA before he left for BC and he's single so we are good with most of the things but I'm sure there's some items to still be addressed.  Years ago hubby & I went on Legal Zoom & did Living wills/estate planning for us.  It's pretty simple stuff (as we are pretty simple people) but at least we have something in place.  And both the gma's know how to get a hold of sailor in case something were to happen on our end.  Not stuff we normally want to think about, but it is good to discuss once in a while!

Thank you all. Spoke to Red Cross. They were as helpful as they could be. They wont make notification because of their guidelines. It doesn't help that my son's ship is deployed and the region they are in right now, per Red Cross. I have a call in to the ship's Ombudsman. I did find my sons book with all of his information in it, so that'll help. "Expect the unexpected"

Tom I could't agree more. I remember, when I first joined this group, that there was another family going through something similar. Only their Sailor was still in training and was state-side. You gave the same valuable speech.

Thank you all for your support.

Comment by Nancy on May 28, 2015 at 12:56pm

Tom, that is so important. When our sailor was young, we were an Army family. We always had a plan in place, because we didn't live close to family, and I won't want most of my family to make decisions about these things. The people we wanted to make decisions for us were the people we chose. AND we had a guardian for our son until he was old enough to not need one.

Britefuture, so sorry about your aunt.

B'sNukeMoM, when I went to a local Blue Star Mothers meeting the Navy mom's were telling me that they have an instant travel pack they carry "just in case". I don't recall what all was in it but it included a passport and cash.
