So I'm a bit confused as well.  I'm not sure if I should be in this group.  As I know the crew have "switch" ships!  My son is soon to be, as we speak, joining the GW in Cali, but the top of this says this group is for sailors on their way to Japan on the GW?  Is that old?  He will be bringing this ship to its destination, VA, at some point!

Brooke - when they are out on deployment email will become your best friend!  As for port visits it can vary sometimes it may only be a day or two some maybe 4-5 days.  I can send you a private message with the info I have so far.

So my Husband is meeting up with the George Washington while the ship is in San Diego, this will be his first deployment so neither of us really know what to expect. I just have a few questions hopefully someone will be able to help me with, first how common is communication while they're out, when they visit a port how long are they usually there (if this is one of those things that can't be answered because of security I understand), and last about how far in advance do they usually give out the homecoming date? Thank you in advance!

Well, our sailor warned us the Stop would not be one where we could visit. I kept hoping he was wrong.

My loved one did tell me dates. However, he also stated that the CO said to not invite friends or family because it's A a working port and B they won't be let off until the swap is complete. I know the working port is no big deal. But I'm more worried about the swap part. So I guess I was asking if anyone has received any information about that?
Comment by 1preciousgirl on July 6, 2015 at 7:07pm

The next port visit is the hull swap-due to security, I wont say when but if you have a loved one on the GW, you should know the dates and where this will happen.  They will not make Golden Shellback coming at anytime on the deployment (that I've heard of) because of the route being taken.

Hello. Has anyone heard anymore update about the next port? I know where it is but I was wondering if anything further has been found out?
Comment by Brooke on July 1, 2015 at 9:41pm
Yes lots of suspense and waiting! I will keep you updated, fingers crossed he will be staying with the GW(:
