Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed.  Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

My daughter has just sworn in for BM and is wondering if she will get to pick a speciality she is wanting search and rescue...

Surface Rescue Swimmer, NEC 0170, is a classification open to all ratings, not only BMs. Its a volunteer position that a Sailor takes on in addition to his/her regular job aboard ship. Could your daughter volunteer for the 4 week training school? Certainly. If your daughter wanted the full time job of Aviation Rescue Swimmer (AIRR), that's a possibility, but she will have to serve as a BM for a couple of years before seeking a transfer to Aviation Aircrew. AIRR is a really tough school that's classed as Special Ops.

Ok she ws worried about what she be doing as a BM and really wanted air rescue or any of the positions similar she is a big swimmer. They told her she be like a supervisor over certain things on ship big list of stuff but people were telling her no you will be a painter so then she was worried.

My son is in currently as HC and has a speciality he went to thru that...and now my daughter who is currently in the dep program leaves next July so I was trying to get as much information as possible to help her and reassure her as that was not her first pick..

"A Boatswains Mate maintains the exterior surfaces of ships.....". Yeah, they scrape rust and paint. Among other things.

Personally, its not a rating I'd recommend for my daughter. However, so many Navy jobs are what a Sailor makes of them. People told my daughter that being a YN was just filing and typing, so she volunteered for everything that came her way: color guard, ships librarian, "smash & crash" team on the flight deck, legal training, small arm proficiency. The officer who swore her in at MEPS (see photo below) told her to take advantage of the "face time" YNs have with the officers. She took that advice and became secretary to the CO & XO. In 4 years she had a brag sheet that earned her the job of a lifetime at her next duty station. Anything is possible.

What happen is she wanted HC but she studied hard for her asvab scored very high but her higher scores were in auto and mechanics probably cuz she studied that little extra since she didn't know it as well. So HC wasnt a option given to her

Not all the jobs that a potential recruit are qualified for are available at any given time. Just too many recruits and not enough jobs. Twelve years ago my daughter took the ASVAB and was offers 6 really good jobs. Then the economy tanked and kids turned to the military when the civilian job market dried up. Now kids are lucky if they get offered anything that they may have a aptitude for.

Yes, she can talk to her recruiter about the possibility of changing jobs. Ask for a DEP Action Request (DAR). If another DEPper drops out of the program she needs to be prepared.

Since your future Sailor will go to “A” School for Boatswain's Mate (BM), join Boatswain Mate. You will also want to join Great Lakes A School Q&A and GL A-school moms. You can also check out the Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes Facebook Page.

The Rating Information Card for BM can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/usn/enlisted/rating_info_cards/bm.pdf. (If you get the security warning, it is safe to go there.)

You will be able to enjoy extra time with your then Sailor following PIR. (See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend.)

Join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in July. You will meet others with loved ones leaving the same day or week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. Those posting now have future Sailors who are soon to ship or recruits who have recently shipped, so you may want to wait awhile before posting. If she really is not happy with the BM rating, she can do as Cryptodad said and talk to her recruiter and ask to put in a DEP Action Request (DAR) to try to get the rating she desires. The only way she would be offered a different contract though is if another future Sailor with a contract for the rating she wants drops out of DEP or is unable to ship or changes contracts for some reason. If nothing opens up before she ships, then she will ship with her current contract and although some are able to change contracts while in BC, it doesn't happen often.
