Hello Everyone

So I am very new to all of this. My son went to a recruiter and signed up. He was automaticly approved for the Nuke program so I am very proud of him. He goes down to MEPS on Wednesday 7/8/15 and will be sworn in Thursday 7/9/15. He is on the DEP program due to he doesn't graduate high school until May 2016. So I guess my question is, After he swears in on Thursday and signs the paper work will we have a date then that he leaves for boot camp (to where I can plan his party and all :) ) or will we get it at a later date.

Thank you.

I am so proud of him and so excited for him. But as a mom and him being my first born and know how fast this year is going to go by it makes it really hard.

Yes, he will sign a contract with a ship date if there is a Nuke contract available when he goes to MEPS.

Thank you for the quick answer. I can say that really makes it feel a lot more real.

Stephanie, you sound like me one year ago! My first born enlisted last summer, in the Nukes, started DEP, and just left for boot camp on July 1st. He graduated from high school on June 4th. We had his graduation/anchors aweigh party on May 30th. Then we were all able to relax and enjoy all the graduation festivities and our final month with him before he left. It will go fast, but your son will be so ready! It's sad, but the pride and excitement will overshadow the sadness. Good luck and God bless!

My son was in DEP from August 2014 until June 29, 2015.  He also signed up early.  While in the DEP program his recruiting office required him to attend monthly meetings and some Physical Training.  He also was required to stay in contact with his recruiter on a weekly basis.

They did give him a ship date of July 7th, however the week before he graduated he got a call from a Petty Officer in his recruiting office asking if he could leave sooner.  He agreed and shipped earlier.

This was our experience, I hope it helps you.  =)

Thank you so much BlessedX3. This site is wonderful. Here where I'm at I don't really have anyone to talk to about my feelings or how proud of him I am. It seems like they all get tired of hearing about how proud I am. I know he will do great and he is so excited that he has his future planned out and ready before most of his classmates. So I think I'm a pretty lucky mom. :)

Helps a lot. So just in case I should plan hi party before school ends incase he gets called in early right?

Stephanie, yes, there is the possibility that your then future Sailor may be offered an earlier ship date if someone is unable to ship. He could turn it down, but if he has graduated when the call comes, many (probably most) do take the early ship dates, so you may want to include his going away to boot camp (Anchors Aweigh) party with his graduation from high school party or soon after. He won't ship before high school graduation.

Stephanie, we had our sons party the week before baccalaureate and graduation, so that we didn't have the stress of getting ready for a party afterwards, and could really enjoy the festivities and other people's parties. And yes, this is a great site!! So nice knowing that there are others in the same boat (pun intended!!) you took the words out of my mouth! Our son also has his future planned before his friends and was able to TOTALLY enjoy his senior year of high school. A huge weight off of his shoulders, so he could enjoy and try all kinds of sports, club activities, etc. without worrying about college acceptance letters, working to save money for school, etc.
