My son is MM. PIR 10-2. I'm so excited to see him. I have a question though. His recruiter told us he would be at sea no more than 9 months the first 4 years. But from what I'm reading, he will be at sea for a LOT longer. Is there an average? Am I having an anxiety attack over nothing? Please help!

fayegirrl14 it depends on a lot of things. My son did not get his first choice of Mayport, but not a lot goes on there anyway. I think the higher they graduate in A School factors in (my son was second in his class, but he still didn't get first choice), what type of ship he will be on, what the need for his rate in that location is at the time they assign him, etc. It seems it really is just a crap shoot. Here is wishing him the best!

Hello all! Quick question:  When sailors are asked to pick their top 3 duty station locations, what are the odds of their first pick being honored? Having said that, I realize that this is the Navy and can change at any time.  Our son got to pick yesterday and put down Pearl Harbor, Kings Bay and Guam. He will be in Groton til sometime in January. I am hoping that he will get some leave between Thanksgiving and Christmas. If he does, we are planning on driving up to pick him up if we can.  11 1/2 hour drive but we have never been that far North so I think it will be exciting.

Hifayegirrl14*. We also have a MM in Groton. He graduated boot camp in October 2013 & went to Groton for BESS & other schools. He loved Groton & chose it as his first choice to be stationed & got it! He is an MM, A-ganger, on the Pittsburgh. He is also an FA. I think MMs are also firemen. He is a twin the other is also a sailor! They went to boot camp a week apart but had the same PIR. Our other is an HT on a destroyer in Norfolk. You will survive them both being in the Navy, it's tough, but you can do it! If you have any questions let me know, I might not know the answers to them, but will try to help.

Hello!  Our son's PIR was last Friday, 9/4/15 and he is now in Groton, CT.  His rating is MM but he said he is a FA now. Fireman's Apprentice??  How many different designations/titles/rates will he have? Im sorry, Im still trying to figure this all out. All I know is that he wants to be on a submarine. Not sure if he started classes today or is waiting for more sailors to join. I do know that he is doing a better job of keeping in contact with us than he did while he was still home! Happy Mom here for sure!

We have another son that is in DEP and will ship out to GL 7/19/16 so we will be back in boot camp again. Wow..not sure if I can survive another 8 weeks of that!

My son's PIR is Oct 2 then MM school there in great lakes. Thanks for the info on timeframe in A school. So if they are there over the holidays do they more than likely close or not have classes? Will they get liberty to fly home for Christmas?

Wendy93, my son also completed Groton in May after being done at Great Lakes in early January. He told me that he was kept busy working on getting his liberty permissions expanded so that he had more opportunities to leave base. He did a lot of time guarding buildings, also. Said the classes, when they finally started, were interesting and not overly difficult. He said that he and his buddies watched a lot of movies, and we had a few opportunities to skype from the room full of computers on the base.
