Possible? The probability of a RC to AC conversion in boot camp is very, very low. He signed a contract. When his enlistment is up, the probability increases, but only if he has a rate, rating and skill set that the Active Component needs.

Very disappointing. My son signed his contract for reservists while in college now realizes he could have had the best of both worlds. While in Boot camp he loves the Military and would like active duty. Hope he can work it out said he will continue trying. Can you tell me if he will be able to go directly to A school after Boot camp?

This also happened with my fiancé he wanted to be active but his recruiter said he would have to be at his division for at least 6 to 8 months. Just talk to his recruiter he should be able to give you more information about it. My fiancé is planning to do it asap.

Thanks will relay information. Hoping things workout for both of the Sailors.

What rating (job) will your son go to A school for? I ask because there is a short list of ratings that are eligible to go Full Time Support (FTS) within the reserves. Like active duty (full benefits) but serving in a support role for a reserve center/base/ship. Just a thought.

His rating is Machinist Mate. He said that he would be going to A school in Great Lakes Illinois. Do you know  if reservists go straight to A school directly from Boot camp or do they come home for awhile? Also, how hard would it be for him to go FTS with this rating? Thanks for you help and direction. He certainly wishes he would have signed on full time. As you stated that maybe difficult so now looking into other avenues.

He will go straight to A school after boot camp.

How hard would it be for him to go FTS with this rating? Impossible without a change in rating. Sorry.

The list of FTS ratings can be found in this document:

Thank you for your help. I will send my son this information and perhaps he can change his rating. Depending on the level of difficulty. Who should he speak to about this situation? Is there  someone in Boot Camp that can make this possible?

I failed to mention that my son went in as an E3 also, his first rating was hospital corpsman. He scored high enough but due to the recruiter needing to fill a rating he ended up as a MM. He requested several times to be reclassified before Boot camp. Recruiter said that was being done but that HC was full. So now he is in Boot camp going to A school in Great Lakes Illinois for MM unless he can change rating to go FTS. Is this a possibility??? Feeling very disappointed for my son.just trying to go active and not knowing what or who to speak too. Help any suggestions appreciated.

Good morning,
I am new to this site.
My son left for Great Lakes on July 29th.
He is reserves but was hoping to volunteer for active. I haven't spoke with him to know if this remains his plan or not. His rating is AG. I know very little about anything, he signed with the Navy on 6/29/15 and left for boot camp 7/29/15. I'm just wandering what the demand is for this job and if there is a high likely hood of deployment.
Thank you for your time,

Thanks for taking your time to send me this information. I will relay your experience to my son. I can say that it is disappointing but, will have to continue trying. Again thank you.
