Hello everyone,

Bouncing in again to say I have one newly qualified nuke!  Yay!  One down, one to go.  =)  This is my ET.  No orders yet, graduation on August 21.  He has some thoughts, but I don't want to jinx him by saying anything yet.  Our daughter took her 100% a few weeks ago, so now is waiting for her chance to board.  That will not be until September, with graduation slated for early October.  Very excited for both of them.  I have some curiosity questions regarding the boards, how they are done, subjects covered, etc.  I wondered if I could ask them here?  Not too in depth so that it blows OPSEC, at least I don't think, but I am curious.

The Power School photos and questions reminded me of our ET.  Our PS guest speaker actually stopped him from running across the stage (he is camera shy) so I could get his photo.  Yes, the staff is very willing to pose for pictures!  Or get your sailor to pose for you!

TJ, all the best to your sailor.  I hope he goes far in his new rate.  Please tell him to hold his head high.  Hugs to him and you.

AParents, I am sending you a friend request.  Seems we have a few things in common!

Sailors at ease

Sailors at attention

For my son's Power School Grad. It seems there was no real security thing. We showed out pass at the gate and were given directions where to park. First all the sailors assemble by class all around the round center plaza. You can go around and take pictures. first they are rather casual standing there then they stand at attention for pictures. They march to their seats. I got a video of that. Also as your sailors class goes up to get their diploma the parents can go up front to get photos.

Also glad to hear of the happy rerate.  MT is very comparable to the nucs as far as the technical challenge goes, plus the completely unique challenges related to the MT rate on a SSBN.  It will be a tremendous career opportunity for him.

Best of luck to your son TJ!  I'm glad he's happy with his re-rate.

JMama - my son also has USAA & has been happy with it.  He's in VA now and is having to register his car there but it's working out.

Well ladies. It looks like my sailor will re-rate to MT. He is happy with that. Not sure when he'll leave GC and head to Groton. Just wanted to say thanks again for everything.

Thank you NancyJo J's/S'smom this is what I needed to know.  Yes, I have made reservations, oh my goodness I got my plane tickets in February and the hotel in May (not a last minute traveler, too stressfull).  We decided to stay at the Hyatt close to the airport, it has a free shuttle to and from the airport and will shuttle you within 5 miles of the hotel free, so I thought that would be great.

Since my son has to be out of his room anyway I didn't see the need to stay so close to the base since we wanted to see Charleston also.

Not looking forward to the large critters (LOL) had a run in with one of the flying ones when I was in Hawaii many years ago.  Scared me bad.

That's good to know about the 7 am time to get to the ceremony.  I'd rather get there early and get a good seat and see what I'm allowed of the base and of course spend money on the fund raising items (LOL) than to feel rushed.

I looked into staying at the Villas because it was so convenient to the base, but when I realized how much money I would have to spend in taxi's to go to Charleston this made more since.  I've talked to the staff at the Hyatt and they said they will take us to connect with the bus to downtown Charleston so that is money with saving.

We decided to stay for a week since we might not have this opportunity again to see Charleston.  Thank you to everyone who posts on this site, it really is a blessing.

Thanks J's /S' mom it gets confusing, but glad to hear the USAA  insurance is a good one to have.

Transferring car to son.  He is currently in school there.  Does he have to register it in S. C. insure in S.C. and change his license to S. C. ? any help would be greatly appreciated

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on August 3, 2015 at 2:04pm

Hi Donna, good questions! I would say get there early. Does it start at 9:00? I would say 7:30-8:00 would be OK. There will be a line at the gate, you need ID, then the walk from the parking lot. When we got there at that time there were people ahead of us so, anybody out there come earlier than that?

You can take tons of pictures. They pose when your sailor gets his certificate and are glad to pose after the ceremony as well.

Have you lined up your reservation to stay yet? We stayed on base at the Villas and it was great. If it's short notice they may be full already. Your sailor has to secure these for you but they are reasonably price little houses with lots of room for socializing. Right on base is convenient.

Ask away. Somebody here should know the answer. Good luck!
