Our son told us today that he has been dropped from the Nuke program, 2 weeks before prototype graduation. The good news is that he isn't in any sort of trouble or disfavor. He has kept a positive attitude throughout, gave it his best, and didn't give up until they ordered him to stop.

I will hang around and post updates so other families have an idea what to expect.

Once the paperwork catches up, he will have to work out a plan to repay the bonus from Power School. That stings, but won't be a hardship for him.He is expecting orders to DTP (Department of Transitioning Personnel), in 2 or 3 weeks. They have him in a temporary job until then. (At least it is a regular 8-hour shift and not the rotating 12hr +2s he has been doing!) He thinks they will reclassify him as a conventional ET, and they may hold him at DTP for a while until something suitable opens up.

So we are back to the waiting game.

Good on your son for the standup way he's handled himself - it will pay off for him.  One thing about the ET rating, there are a lot of specialty ET ratings he might end up in now, and he's proven himself capable.  I'm not familiar with the surface community, but if he is a sub volunteer, he may like the IT rating, one of the forward ET jobs.  The others are sonar, navigation ET, fire control, and comms.  He'll do well where ever he goes and should have earned a voice in where that is.

Wow! You managed to list his dream sheet, in order, more than 2 weeks before he filled it out. And, no, I didn't mention it to him.

thanks for sharing.

Our son is still in A School and is struggling. The slpo and instructors recognize how hard he's working but he's still struggling. He has a great attitude for whether he stays nuke or rerates. I told him I've been praying for God's will, not stay or go.

All I know is how incredibly difficult this school is, and how exceptional your son must be to have made it so far.  Be proud of him.

Kudos to your son for all the hard work he has put in so far. Absolutely NO disgrace in not making to the end. Being a Nuke just isn't for everyone. Please pass along my sincere hope that he is happy with his new rate.

I was so glad you posted, WBHs. Your son is one of the honored to be chosen to train in this  tough program. It will give him a great career no mater what. He can be proud and so can you.

Well sorry to hear that.  Tell him to hold his head high - be proud of what he's accomplished and I'm sure he'll do well in his next assignment.  I've always enjoyed your input - I hope you stick around for others and be sure to let us know how things turn out.  Hugs to him and you too!

Well, it's official. My son is also out of the program. He reports to DTP today.

It's bittersweet. He was ready to make it work either way.  I know he is dissapointed at not making it as a nuke but at the same time knows that something else may fit him better. I pray he gets one of the rates he's hoping for. I think he has a good chance as his SLPO and instructors often praised him for how hard he was working to try to keep up.

I guess I'll hang out with the nuke moms until I know where "we" are headed. :)

TJ Proudnukemom - aw sorry to hear this....definitely stick around.....you are always welcome here! Best of luck to your son & keep us updated on where he ends up.

Sorry to see this. Everything works out for a reason. Something that is a better fit will come his way. Best of luck!!
WearsLargeHats, thank you for sharing what is happening with your son. Attitude and effort are everything! It's wonderful and inspiring to hear his attitude remained positive and he did not give up. we were told this is a difficult program and school to get through, hardest in the Navy. We are always remaining hopeful, yet keeping in mind that completion may not be in our son's future. No matter what, the Navy will find the next thing, and it will be a good one. Nothing is wasted. The life skills and discipline alone they are learning are invaluable. Adding my prayers for your son to yours. God's will be done.

I am so very sorry to hear that.  It's got to be tough to get that news so close to the finish line.  I received a call from my son today saying that he missed passing his comp for A school graduation this morning by .02 points (he made a 2.48 out of 2.5...missed it by just ONE question.)  He has a verbal test on Wednesday where he'll see if he will move on to Power School or DTP.  He's doing his best right now to keep his outlook positive and says he won't be terribly disappointed if he's rerated.  He already has several things he's interested in if it doesn't work out

After reading your son's situation, I'm actually less concerned about the possibility of my son failing on Wednesday.  Perhaps it's best if he gets rerated earlier rather than later.  I wish the best for all in this situation.  Best of luck on the reclassification.
