OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I gather from the context that your son is bound for the George Washington. It is due for refueling of its reactors, which is done at Newport News (formally known as Huntington-Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding), though they usually begin at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The refueling, as you might imagine is a complex and lengthy work package that takes upwards of three years to complete. Since the ship is still in San Diego for the hull swap, your son may have transferred or gotten out of the Navy before the GW gets back to SD. Happily, there is a lot to recommend about the Tidewater region of Virginia, in spite of what many say about Norfolk/Newport News in particular.

My son's certificate for prototype was in GC. He was so happy to get out that he didn't care for the certificate. But he will when he's older and no longer in the Navy. Dittersmom, hope you get all of Ditter's certificates,to keep them in a safe place.
Talked to my sailor yesterday, he's been working nights and called starting his 4 day off. He didn't want to fall asleep before a certain hour just to make sure his transition to days was smooth. He sounded exhausted. Other than that, he's actually liking his mechanic work on the Lincoln. Also studying for the E-5 exam coming up.
He says his chances of advance are 5%, " because there are brilliant mechanics out there", he says, but trying his best. He is living off base, navy housing. Almost two months by himself in a townhome, no roommate. He's happy. That's all I care about.
A big change since he first got to Newport News back in May. He sounds so grown up. Will turn 22 next month.
Seems like floridians will be getting ready for a storm. Hawaii too. Have a nice weekend, keep safe :)

Comment by Dittersmom on August 28, 2015 at 1:51am: Hi all. Ditter hasn't told when he will report anywhere, so not sure of that. I enjoy his sense of direction. He said to me that he is trying to find the blessing in being in va and has decided that as long as he is going to be on shore duty he can work more on his schooling. He went into the Navy not as a career, but as a way to pay for schooling. All he has ever wanted to do was to help people. He also said that I could visit him easier there then if he had ended up in Japan, so not a total waste. I will up date if he gets a date soon. Thanks for the encouragement.

Submom, glad your son got a sub. I know that God has a way of putting right where we need to be and often times we can look back and see why. It is hard to look forward and see it. I hope he finds his perfect place in GA.

Boywondermom - I have never thought to ask for he certificates. I suppose I will do that now and see what I end up with. LOL.

BoyWonderMom - so glad he got his proto certificate! I finally managed to get all of my son's from him last time he was home so I have them in a safe place! And he gave me his lanyard too from proto grad ;-)

Dittersmom - is your son surface or sub & when does he report to VA?

Comment by BoyWonderMom on August 26, 2015 at 4:33pm: Dittersmom, VA will be kind of a shock at first, but he will slowly grow to like the town. Like B'sNuke said, they make it work. It was my son's second choice. I didn't know he wanted San Diego first. He got VA and will end up in SD anyway.
Submom, Kingsbay is a nice little town. Very close to all the activity in Jacksonville, FL.
B'sNuke, got a hold of my son's prototype certificate!

Aw Dittersmom, I know your son wasn't thrilled with VA but it will all work out. It was one of my son's last choices too, but he's making it work! My son says at least it isn't forever!

submomIII - ugh bummer for your son too. At least he's happy he's on a sub! It's this whole needs of the navy thing! At least by now our sailors are probably used to this lol!

I saw a disturbing story on the news this morning out of VA. A reporter & her cameraman were shot & killed on live tv during a broadcast and the lady they were interviewing was injured. And this was a tourism segment at a water park. Absolutely horrible and heartbreaking for the families. I just can't fathom what would possess a person to do something like this.

He wanted a West Coast fast attack, and got an East Coast boomer. But, he is happy he will be on a sub. Off to find out if they have a group too!!
