Hi Michelle0206... what class is your son in?
Mine says he has to go down to commons to get wifi but that several guys were talking about going in together to buy access in their dorm rooms... don't know how that works exactly but sounds like they have options.

I have a question. Our sailor is in GC at A-School and is still on our Verizon family plan for his phone. He says there's no Wi-fi down there to link in to and he is eating up lots of data and it's costing a small fortune. He has no TV yet, no computer, so I think he's watching YouTube videos at night in his room. Is there a better way or area plan that would be a better deal?

Bethr311, I suspect that the shortage of barracks rooms is due to the fact that there are temporarily four carriers (I believe) in San Diego for the 3 Presidents hull swap, in a port with facilities that ordinarily support just the two carriers homeported there. The good news is that it is temporary, and the Reagan and George Washington will be on their way before much longer. The silver lining of barge living if he is on study hours and behind on quals is that it should be easier to get caught up. Rentals in SD for a single sailor with no roommate is tough, for sure. Imperial Beach usually is the closest available reasonably priced rentals for carrier sailors in SD. "Reasonable" is relative, of course.
Comment by William in Nashua on August 31, 2015 at 3:46pm

Bethr311 it can be tough because on a carrier they can be expected to berth on a carrier when in port, or in your case a barge if they are doing work ups on the carrier.  It is a dice game especially at a crowded port.   Usually the submariners have first crack at  available on-base barracks because a sub is legally uninhabitable when it is not underway.  On my son's submarine though  when they arrived in Hawaii for change of port,  another boat had pulled into the base unexpectedly and snagged all the bed because the barracks allocated to the son's boat at Pearl were no longer available.    For a while they had guys as high as E6 on his boat who still  had to live on the submarine because there wasn't any place on land and they had not rented off base yet housing either.  Luckily my son had rented a house beforehand.  But, that is luck of the draw.

Thank you BWMom. I haven't been able to speak to my sailor regularly but that's because I have been gone so much.  She is on Lim-Du (I call it Lim-bo) or Limited Duty due to an injury.  She is between Power School and Prototype and her injury will require out-patient surgery in a couple of weeks.  I am travelling to GC to help her get to and from the surgery and assist for a few days afterward since she will be on crutches.  Praying that all will go well and she will get back on track and move on with Prototype.  In the meantime, she has a serious boyfriend who is also a Nuke and he has been very helpful.

Bethr311, I sent you a friend request. My son is in SD.

Bethr311, I really don't know if they offer housing in SD, other than the barges or barracks. My son is in VA and after living in the barracks for 3 months he transferred to off base navy housing. Maybe they have that kind of housing in SD. Sometimes having their own space makes it easier for them. (Until they actually have to be in their boat)

Welcome back girl chief! Very busy summer for you!, keep safe, how's your sailor?

Hi everyone, I'd like to ask for some Navy mom and dad mojo for my son. His ship is in SD between deployments and he's still struggling with quals and checkouts. He's on extra hours and having a very hard time. He's living on a barge because there's no base housing and he's having a hard time finding guys to share a space. Any encouraging words? Thank you all very much.

Hello everyone.  I have not been on in ages.  To say that this has been a busy fire season here in CA is an understatement.  I've been doing this firefighter thing for 34 years and laugh every time the authorities predict that this will be "the worst fire season on record," but I must say that this is one of the top 5 worst that I have seen (and we haven't had any Santa Ana's yet).   I occasionally get to read some of the posts through my email but it has been next to impossible to keep up.  Bear with me as I try to catch up. So glad to see so many familiar members as well as several new ones.
