Scuba girl, my son is a torpedo man also. In his last email, he told me that because they had guests on board he had to sleep on top of where they kept the torpedoes. He just tossed his mattress up there and put hard hats under it to make it level lol! Whatever it takes, I guess!

I meant to add, if you can send him with the personalized rack sheets it seems a sweet idea :-)

Oh and I have yet to receive a picture or anything from my son regarding his dolphin's...so typical. I'm thinking he's saving it all for when we finally see him again for a visit. It will be a year this November since we've seen our boys :( Such is the life we military moms lead...sigh.

On behalf of my son, thank you ladies for the congrats.

scubagirl, I'm not connected with any other mom's for my sons boat either. During our son's deployment we had a wonderful team of ladies from the FRG along with the ombuds in Hawaii. Everyone were so helpful and great at answering the few questions we had. They made sure we mainlanders were included in any special events for example a last minute mail-drop. Which for us consisted of an email hastily written with photos included. They printed the emails out, put them in envelopes to arrive as "letters" to the boat :-) They helped us with questions when it came to deciding what could/should be included in his halfway box. Regarding writing emails..Yes, Yes and YES! Keep writing those emails no matter what. Here's a little excerpt from an email our son sent...

Yes I am receiving your emails so keep them coming as often as you like.

That's all I needed to hear :-) I have no advice on sheets as our son had to hot rack; three sailors to two beds and taking their turn to sleep. Maybe someone else here can answer that question.

Thanks mrsb, that is what I thought.  I know if he gets to send a email it will go to the girlfriend first and she will send along any information.  Navy first, girlfriend second and mom third.  Ok with that as long as I get some information once in a while.

Have any of you ordered rack sheets for your sailors?

Trying to decide which one to order.  My son is a MMTM.  He said sometime they have to sleep on a cot with the torpedoes.  He does want rack sheets for his deployment coming up and I want to get them ordered so I can have them embroidered before I send to him.  I think I will have the embroidery done on the bottom of sheets so it will not be seen when he makes the rack.  Any knowledge you more experienced moms have I will appreciate.

scubagirl, you are correct in that they will get the emails but they can't always respond.  So do send him something short and sweet as often as you can and just be patient as he won't be able to respond very quickly, or not at all.

Kevsmom, congratulations on your sailor getting his Dolphins!!! My son will be heading out for his first deployment later this year. He is hoping to earn his Dolphins while out.  He is not looking forward to it as he will not have seen his girlfriend for almost a year by the time he gets back.  She is in FL doing an Internship at Jacksonville State and he is in Norfolk.  She is an Athletic Trainer and is very busy with the ladies sports teams and can not get any time off.  I am hoping some how we can work it out for her to get up to Norfolk when they deploy but it is not looking like it will happen.  He is on the Newportnews a fast attack sub.  I have not met any moms for the subbers on his boat. Most of the guys are young and some are married.  In all the groups I belong to not one person has said they have a son on his boat.  Maybe when we go to see him when they depIoy I will meet a few moms.  Do I understand correctly that even though they may not get to send many emails, they will receive our emails to him on a regular basis?  Hoping his Ombudsman will be good with keeping us informed.  I have communicated with her to make sure she has correct contact information.  Excited to get this first deployment over.  My son plans on asking his girlfriend's parents for permission to marry next fall when they get back next year.  Thank goodness they are taking their time and wanting to get this first deployment out of the way.

Mark thanks for the articles on the Seawolf.  I think it would be so amazing to come up and see all the ice in the NOrth Pole.

LiindaGirl, loved the calendar squares.  I have never heard of them before.

Hoping all the moms in this group see or hear from your sailors soon.

Have a great week.

The USS Seawolf made the news recently after completing an Arctic deployment.  I recall a few Seawolf Moms are on occasionally who will certainly enjoy these...

Kevsmom, I think I told you before but congratulations on Kevin earning his fish!!!!  That's just awesome!!!  Only mine is left out of our little group of boys but I should be hearing from him any day now, hopefully.  I sure hope someone takes a picture!!!

Cath Bubblehead, I think the Calendar Squares are supposed to be a surprise for the sailors, as I sent them to the ombudsman of the sub when I was done making them. From what I understand, they are then given to someone on the sub who is in charge of the calendar each month. It is up to each individual sub whether they want to do it or not when their long deployment comes up.

LindaGirl - The calendar squares are a nice idea - do you send them to him before he goes out or in a halfway box?

KevinsMom - congratulations on the "fish"
