@Lisa do you mean during training? I don't know for sure but I can try to find out. I do know that the school is closed during holidays and they had a few 4 day weekends (4th of July and memorial day that I remember). But he couldn't leave for the 4th because he had duty. I'm not sure how they do Christmas but I'll ask

Also, this is a bit biased, but since we're the only ones in his group of friends with a place to live close by, we pretty much became their storage unit when everyone left town haha. They couldn't take all their stuff on a plane so it's just sitting here. Do you have a way to get it back when he leaves? Cause as much as those few months suck, they really do fly by

I guess it depends on how self disciplined he is. For at least the first couple of weeks they have mandatory study hours until 10pm. And they pretty much need to stick to that to pass. They have a certain number of hours on the weekend (i think 6) and after that they do have some free time. My husband bought a little dvd player at the nex. Personally, I'd just try to tough it out. It's really only a few months out of at least 6 years in the navy, and it'll be worth it if he gets to pick good orders.

He shared a room and bathroom with 2 other guys, but one of them stayed out in town with his wife. Idk if that's how all the rooms are.

My husband had more time towards the end of A school and during C school, which is when I moved here and he got a chit to move out of the barracks. Do you think he can manage his time well? My husband says it was a lot harder than college...

I am so glad I found this page and thankful for the moms who have stuck around to answer questions for us new moms. My son is at BC now and will be heading there in December. While I understand that school is competitive and he needs to focus on his studies, he had said that he wants his computer (desktop) and his PS4....now I am not so sure that those distractions are in his best interest, but am wondering a few "practical" questions. Will they have that much room in their barracks? Do they change barracks between A and C schools? Do they share rooms or do they have mini suites where they have their own bedroom and share a bathroom? Any other info you can give about their living conditions? Thank you

Does anyone know if the sailors will be able to take a few days leave for Christmas?

Aprilo, a car is nice but not a must have.
Laura, sounds like we are neighbors. I'm between Dam Neck and Oceana

Hello moms! Happy Labor Day... My son has been at Dam Neck in A School since the beginning of July. Very interesting to hear the changes from boot camp and changes as they go along in A school-- as others have said, it is extremely busy and competitive. They study study study- or should be. I was just down visiting my son to bring him his vehicle, which he can now have. Didn't go on base, but he said it's pretty old an typical. I hear the food is crummy, and eventually they can go off base for occasional meals out. He said not to send food at first, but later I brought him granola bars, nuts etc because he says sometimes they're to rushed to eat breakfast... But he is really happy there, learning interesting things (which they absolutely don't talk about!), and waiting to begin C school soon-- you will love being able to talk to your son more often than in Boot, but let them call you since they're busy-- texting works well ! Best of luck to all your sailors !!

my advice to tell your sailor to stay focused on class and studies. they have a lot more freedom than BC, and easy to slack off. even on weekends they have liberty, stay focused and study. there'll be plenty of time later to enjoy time off. make sure to get wifi hooked up in room asap, try to get roommates to go in on costs.

Our son went through A & C schools at Dam Neck. Finished C school at end of April. Now stationed there for 3 yrs. A school is almost all-consuming - school all day + PT then back to school house to study at night and on weekends. They 'earn' the privilege to go off base, etc.
