I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Thanks!   They use BAS as an accounting thing, so sometimes you'll see it do that in the fleet. Someone somewhere is counting those pennies.

Anti M - bas does not go in and come back out in boot camp, it's just not there at all. Not that it matters in the end, the result is the same :)

My husband arrived in late march and his first check was April 15 and included pay and bah. There is no BAS when in boot camp because they are fed there. BAS is for them to buy food when living off base. So if they're assigned to a ship later that has a galley, they might not get bas then either. Also, according to my husbands les, they gave him ~$250 for initial clothing but debited $700 on the next check for it. And FSH was on the April check. If you're already married when he goes and they have all of the paperwork in order, you should get your bah with the first check.

BAS is for the military member, never for the dependents, so do not look for it.  That goes in and then back out during boot camp.  It is for the sailor to eat with if they are not eating in a government facility.  That means when he deploys, you lose that grocery money.

The first check can be smaller because yes, they do deduct for necessities and certain uniform items.  Taxes too, state and federal (states vary).  BAH, maybe in the first, sometimes it is in the second check, but yes, that allowance is backdated.

No we didn't do POA yet, def do it b4 he leaves especially if you have children, just to be safe... From what I remember those deductions don't affect his base pay because they are a credit and then deducted from the credit if that makes sense.. I start getting fsa after 30 days so yes that was included but BAS is not included until after boot camp if I remember correctly
Comment by alab610 on February 7, 2016 at 7:36pm

Oh and when did they deduct the money for uniforms and items that he needs? THANK YOU!!!!

Comment by alab610 on February 7, 2016 at 7:31pm

Also, did you get a power of attorney when your husband left for boot and training?

Comment by alab610 on February 7, 2016 at 7:20pm

Thank you so much for your response Sophia! It's very overwhelming not knowing what to expect exactly. There is just so much to know!

So you got 1 month back pay + half of the current months base pay and BAH? And that included his base pay and BAH, but when did you get the FSA (separation) and BAS (subsistence pay)? ..I'm still learning the acronyms.

Comment by Sophia on February 7, 2016 at 6:58pm
For us it took one month and that first payment included the back-pay and our BAH (pretty nice surprise into our bank account lol). Have your husband take a direct deposit form for your bank already and make sure you have full access to the account as well so there aren't any problems. My husband set up his navy federal account in boot camp but we set up the direct deposit to our existing account to avoid any other deposit delays. I've heard different stories about different time frames and that it all depends on when and how fast they complete their paperwork when they get there but ours was one month included back pay and bah!

Hi everyone! My husband will be going to Great Lakes for boot camp in 2 wks. We are wondering if anyone knows when his first pay will be and what will be included in it. We've heard that you don't get your first pay for a month after boot and it's only base pay, the housing allowance etc. is included later and will be back dated. Anyone know if this is true? Thanks in advance!
