Does anyone know anything azbout GSE rating. My husband got that assinged to him after scoring a 94% on the asvab test. They wanted hium to go Nuke but he is to old. Someone from D.C. called him 2 days ago and asked him if he was interested in Nuke and he stated yes, then the gentalmen said good he would be in contact with him in the up coming months. We have no clue what that means. HE is going in as E3 but his Recruiter told him that he can take the test for E4 just before he ships out for boot camp I dont know if thats true or not. I have seen some of the things our recruiter tell him to be bent truthes.

Pretty sure the claim that you can take the E4 test before boot camp is a "bent truth" at the very least.  Much closer to a total untruth. There is one rare exception to the rule that no one goes in as enlisted higher than an E3 & you cannot take an E4 test until after A school.  Certain rates that have long A schools (such as the Nuke program & some CT rates) may have auto E4 at the end of A school.  And most rates offer an early promotion to the top 10% of the graduating A school class.  My son graduated first in his class & was offered the early promotion. He will be promoted to E4 after being at his first command for 4 months & will not have to take the exam.  He had to agree to an additional year of enlistment to get this.

If his recruiter offered this get it in writing.  No promise is valid unless it is written into your contract.  He needs to read the contract carefully when he signs the final contract before he leaves for bootcamp to make sure all guaranees (such as E3) are still in the contract.

The only exception to the E3 max rule is a program called DPEP.  It is very rare.  To get this you must have extensive civilian technical/vocational experience in a field that is very undermanned in the Navy. One example I found is Mortician.  Since the Navy doesn't have a school for this, an applicant must already have state licensure and would probably go in at an E5.

Also - here is a link to the GSE community page

Click on GSE community overview.

Then look at "ADV OPP" on the right side of the page.

This is as of the last promotion cycle, so it is current.

The promotion opportunities vs Navy average are excellent.  Last time 100% of those who took the E4 test were promoted.  So it looks like a good rate to be going into

I should have also said that there are sometimes age waivers available for the Nuke program, so it is possible that could be offered to him.

Well I know he is a E3 as I have seen the contract and he has 2 associates degrees and almost don't with his bach degree and most of it is in the medical feild. We will look over his final contract. We both thought that there is no way he could test for a E4 that soon. I know he is at the recruitment station once a week and has to check in on the phone every Monday. He scored i the top 1% he was told by everyone. His recruiter also thought it was nice when someone called for him from D.C seeing if he was interested in going to the Nuke field, something he wanted to do. But He is happy with whatever, that is just how he is.

My son also scored very, very high on the ASVAB and was almost finished with his bachelor's degree when he ran out of money.   He wanted to go Nuke & they wanted him to and offered him an age waiver (he is 25), but at MEPS they decided he was  partially color deficient, so it was a no go.  He was very disappointed but in the end enlisted anyway as a YN and is at his first command.  He and his wife love it!  They are both happier than they have ever been & it was the right decision for them. My DIL's advice is to become involved with the other wives on base as soon as you get there, it will help during his deployments.

Thank you Garden Gal. This is all new to me. I lived up on K.I Sawyer Air base when I was real young but I don't remember much but what I did when I was a kid. MY husband is 31 so like I said I was very surprised that they called and asked him because we knew he was to old. But I have been told that GSE is a very nice job, he is just excited to get going and started.

It is a great life.  My father was in 30 years, so I grew up on Navy bases. I wish both of you the best of luck.  You can PM me if you have any questions.  Between my son, DIL & myself we can probably come up with something.

I was an auto-advance ET,  and my nephew is a nuke.  Nuke is a tough field.  Long hours in school, long hours in the fleet.  GSE is a sea-going rating, very hands on.

I have never heard of anyone taking the E-4 exam before boot camp.  There's more to being a petty officer than the rating knowledge, there's the leadership and naval knowledge components to be learned.  He can get a guarantee for the auto-advance.  Just sounds all sorts of wrong to me.

Thank you everyone we both think it's not true about him being able to advance before he even gets in boot camp. He thinks he was just trying to butter him up and my husband hates lies that is something that pisses him off. He is just glad that he's in and hopes for good advancement. I am glad with his job because we can stay where we live until he gets his first assignment as we live with in 20 miles of Great Lakes for boot camp and school A as his schooling is ther too for 22 weeks

22 weeks is the seat time, it will assuredly be longer.
