Hi everyone! My boyfriend is currently in bootcamp for either FC or ET. He was told before bootcamp by his recruiter that he will be going to both A and C school in GL. I've read some of your posts saying that this could change etc. Will it change or will it stay the same?? Still new to the Navy life and I would love some insight.

Our son just moved to the GL training center two weeks ago.  He too enlisted as AECF.

About the 7th week of basic training your boyfriend will get his orders for either ET or FC.  This mostly depends on the 'needs of the Navy'.  His test scores can influence which rate he is assigned.  Both rates have their A school at GL.  After the week long indoctrination at GL he will go through ATT (Apprentice Technical Training) school for about 4 - 6 weeks.  After that he will go through A school.  FCs for 27 weeks, ETs for 42 weeks.  Keep in mind that he may not start A school right after ATT.  Often there is a hold period; the sailors must wait to class up.  Currently FCs are on about a 3-4 month hold, ETs less time.  During hold they clean. A lot.  And wait around.  A lot.  So, he can plan on being at GL for about a year after PIR.

Our son is in bootcamp now In GL. Ship 3 Div 184.
He is also in AECF ET. Have not heard from him yet, other than the form letter. Week 3 phone call is one week away! Looking forward to hearing how he's doing.

Hope to network with other parents / family who have don's in the same company.

Our son is also Ship 3 Div 184 and in AECF, not exactly sure yet if ET or FC.  He's very proud and excited about A school, says all those going into AECF in his division are great people:)

We're very much looking forward to PIR!

So is your son ET or FC?  Our son PIR'd this past Friday and is going to the ET Strand at GL; we spent the weekend with him after he moved over to the school side of GL.  He said he starts school May 14th.

Excellent question and info!

My son is also either ET of FC and was told both would be at GL. However, recently he mentioned in a letter that A school is only 5 months...I didn't think that was correct.

I hope that he attends both A and C schools in GL simply bc we are just a few hours away :)

The hold times is what makes the schooling seem longer. My son's PIR was 3/4 and he's on week 4 of a 4 month hold before his ATT school even starts. There is a lot of of waiting around and cleaning, he has a duty day every 4 days but he's already phased up so that's good.
You can plan for your child to be in Great Lakes for a long time, count on it!
My son's A school for FC has been 7 months. This includes ATT at the beginning. C school is not in GL for FCs. He will be in GL for quite a while!
C school would be in San Diego or Virginia if he is an FC. Each city teaches a specific weapon. I have heard ET has schools in lots of places. My son will finish FC school in May. His test scores in FC school will determine which weapon he gets to choose. He was on hold for 3 months before starting FC school. Your boyfriend will start living in one dorm (ship) when he starts ATT and then move to another ship when he starts FC school.

Most, if not all barracks (ships) will have internet but the bandwidth is poor.  Our son has been in the Missouri since PIR mid March on hold the whole time.  Hope he will be classing up for his ET school soon.  He's extremely bored.

If my boyfriend graduates this Friday May 6th, do you think he will start school on the 14th as well? I'd love for his hold to not be long lol

My sons PIR was 6/3/16.  I wondered if anyone has any more current news on the state of ATT school or A school for AE FC at Great Lakes, has there been any recent classes or does anyone know of a soon start day for these Sailors?

He is extremely laid back about this but his shipmate is very anxious not knowing.

Thanks for sharing.

Kelly H.

My son is telling me ATT school will start in July.
