So we saw our son off to his first boat today. It is hard to say goodbye when he is going 4,700 miles away and we have no idea when we might see him again. I told him to work hard, have some fun, and treasure this time. And managed not to tear up until he was on the plane.

bonnieb75 yes what you are feeling is perfectly normal. Just keep sending emails. He's reading them all I promise! If he's on a fast attack you'll probably get a phone call while they are in port. Stay busy doing things you love to do, it helps. My sailor will soon be headed out on his second deployment in 3 years. I won't say you get used to it but it becomes a new normal. Hang in there!!

bonnieb75 - remember the Navy mantra - "No news is good news!" There are times they run silent - no news goes out. Depending on the sub, access to a computer is very limited. Just continue to email him. He will be very busy, so I am sure this is harder on the loved ones than it is on the sailors.

Bonnieb75 - yes, it's normal. My son told me that I couldn't send enough email, they went "dark" for 6 weeks, and that he actually enjoyed hearing how I was taking care of myself and because he didn't have to worry about me.

I really struggled at first. My sister recommended that I do things I like that I normally don't do: travel, see a show, treat myself to pampering things like massages, facials, mani/pedi, etc.

I hope he mentally prepared himself for this...

In my son's first deployment I got maybe 5 emails from him. I did get phone calls when they were in a port, but that depends on the kind of sub I think. Mine on a Fast Attack. However He did for the most part get my emails and requested I send them as often as daily for news of the outside. No pictures allowed or links allowed just text. I felt useful to supply him with news and a way to lift his spirits. You have been very fortunate that this is the first one for you in 5 years!! Hang in there this is part of being part of the silent service.

Hi bonnieb75...Unfortunately I don't think we are ever really prepared for deployment of our loved ones...but it is just the way it is. Yes, your feelings are normal.

Comment by bonnieb75 on June 28, 2016 at 6:28pm
It's been 3 weeks since I heard anything! The ombudsman assured me that everything is ok but I'm still worried. His first deployment in 5 years.. I wasn't prepared for this. I can't wait for an email. My mind won't stop... Please tell me what I'm feeling is normal...

Thank you John & Yvonne. My son could sure use a fellow Christian....encouragement! Sometimes he feels alone in that respect. It would ease his mother's mind LOL. Blessings.
