On that note... We definitely need a government move because we are already on the other side of the country from our home of record. Has anyone had any experience with already being at the duty station and THEN getting a HHG? We are in a very unique situation... I think I am going to go set up an appointment with a moving counselor.

Okay I swear there was a question in here about what the difference between a government move and a DITY move is
Comment by abuon18 on June 29, 2016 at 6:34pm
Govt move is when the navy schedules movers to come in, pack up your house, move it to your new location, then bring it to your new house. DITY= do it yourself, you move yourselves and the Navy reimburses you.

Can anyone give me information about a "post-school/student" move for my husband? He's been in training and school since he's graduated boot camp, so he has not moved from his home of record yet. He is currently in training on the same base he has permanent orders to, but will be done next month... so we are trying to get an idea of how/when we can get things moved out here, and what he needs to do on his end. Thanks!

They will move you.  Be aware, the move is paid as a reimbursement, not money up front.  Are you going to have a packout or move your things yourself?  There is a specific way to do the move, and mov.mil can help with that, or the personal property office.

If you are driving, he can ask for advanced travel pay.  He needs to talk t the travel office, make sure he knows what to expect, which receipts to save, etc.

From what I get, he's finishing one course of training and his new first duty station is right there too, and he is applying for another special training program.  Do I have that kinda right, Bronco?

Comment by abuon18 on May 5, 2016 at 6:13am
Bronco, so he is at his permanent duty station now? I don't know why I was under the impression he was in A school and would be going for more training before receiving orders to his permanent duty station. If he is at his permanent duty station and they are sending him to additional training that is a TDY and wouldn't be eligible to break a lease under the SCRA.

In regards to the under/over 20 weeks for a PCS or TDY, that's not necessarily true. Some schools are longer than 20 weeks but can be TDY if a command is sending their Sailors there for additional training. And while the Navy will not pay to move a spouse or dependents if the orders are for less than 20 weeks, if they are for A school or C school they are for an "ultimate activity" which is notherwise a permanent change as it's not your permanent duty station but it is permanently detaching you from your previous command so in that sense it can be used to break a lease.
Comment by Bronco14 on May 4, 2016 at 11:43pm

Aboun, okay that kind of makes more sense. So there is a possibilty his orders would still be PCS but they would be unaccompanied if they were less than 20 weeks. He wouldn't technically be going to an A school, just training courses. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. He still would not be returning to this command though.

But I pretty much studied the Joint Travel Regulations handbook last night, haha, and what I've gathered is any orders under 20 weeks is considered a TDY and anything over 20 weeks is a PCS. A school might be an exception to this but I wonder if this would go for his training courses. He is under the impression that his first orders to his first training command will be over 20 weeks, because of a prep course he would do beforehand at the same installation. So I guess all we have to do now is just wait and see what his orders say... I swear my brain is in overload right now!!

I seriously appreciate all your help with this!

Bronco, I am pretty sure that A school orders are for all intents and purposes considered on the same level as PCS orders, not TDY, because you are permanently detaching from one command to go to your training command, even if it is not your permanent duty station, whereas a TDY order will still have you attached to your current command, with a designated length of time authorized to be away from your command for a training or mission purpose but you will be returning to that command. With A school orders, you're detaching from a command permanently and temporarily attaching to another while you await your permanent duty station orders, but there is not an implication that you are returning to the command from which you detached so you should be able to use those to get out of a lease.
