KAM Mom,
Thanks so much for the information!  I really appreciate the words of wisdom!

Pooh'sMom,

My son is here visiting after graduating recently from Power School.  He explained it like this:  if your sailor is "grad and go" then yes they must check on that day.  If your sailor is"grad and hold" they will remain on base until new orders are given.  Your sailor is not assigned either status until about 3 weeks prior to graduation.  Right now there is a "back-up" as one of the reactors is down and so the pipepline is very slow.  It may be several months before my sailor finds out when he will go to Prototype. It may be that even those who are "grad and go" will be on hold for a while before starting prototype.

That is my understanding right now, but the Navy can surprise you....just try to be flexible and don't count your chicks until they hatch.   Meanwhile enjoy the trip down the pipeline wherever it leads.  Happy 4th of July!!!

Question for experienced Power School folks.  My son is scheduled to graduate from Power School on December 2nd.  After that, I have heard they have to be out of housing that afternoon.  If given a choice, he wants to go to BS in NY.  What impact does this have on Christmas?  (Knowing that things are always subject to change. . . )

My son is on an Island so he lives in the barracks when he's not on the sub.

Comment by mommajo on July 1, 2016 at 2:10pm

Lilo, When my son got to the carrier he lived in the barracks as he was not married.  As soon as he became E5 he moved off base to an apartment with another sailor.  BAH did not cover an apartment in SanDiego without a roommate.  If needed, they can get storage units for personal belongings while living on the carrier.  Some keep everything in their vehicles.  The space in berthing is very limited.

Thanks for the input.  I was talking to my sailor last night and he said that when he is assigned to a ship, he thinks he would probably have to stay onboard but if he was assigned to a sub, he would get base housing.  Of course, I'm sure it depends on where he will be assigned. Just thought I would ask to see what others have experienced.
