hello all!  Happy Friday!   it's been awhile but I have been following everyone!  Wanted to let Proudmom77 know my son is in Groton CT also, he is in his A-School right now!   He worked hard to stay in the top 5 of his class so he could get first pick at what station he wanted!  He did it, he got to pick last Friday and there was an opening in Hawaii, so he will be going there!  He is studying for Sonar Tech also!   Tell your son to work hard to stay in top of class, they get to pick stations first, which means they get best choices, not just what is left!!  Good Luck to your son and you!!!

One of mine got his stuff shipped after graduation, but He was stationed in Hawaii, kinda hard to drive there. They even shipped his car.

I feel us Mom's don't have to figure this stuff out for our kids. They are learning to fly on their own and will figure it out. They get help with this stuff. Both of mine figured out all that and more. One got his car out to him. sold it two months later, bought a new car, got registration and insurance on his own. Both have gotten their own airline tickets for leave visits. one got a storage locker for deployment, the other on I think got to keep his room with all his stuff in it. I find it fascinating how grown up they are at this point.

Good luck to your son in A school! My husband is a Sonar Tech and we will be heading back to CT next year :)

Thank you all for the information. My son is still in CT right now finishing up the TECHNO class and then A school for Sonar Tech. Guess he'll be there for several more months before he gets his orders, so not sure yet where he'll be stationed. I was just thinking ahead as I like to stay on top of things. :)

The ombudsman for my son's sub is great! Very informative and answered quickly the 2 e-mails I sent. Kept us up-to-date on everything happening. Gave me more info. than my son! But like another mom said, they are so busy they don't even think about reporting in to us anymore. Spoke with my son yesterday and he said he's been on Midnight to Noon shifts since he returned from his leave. He's still having trouble sleeping since returning from this underway and it's been over a month! Praying for him a lot!

Proudmom77 sounds like it's pretty much the same for most sailors. My son is stationed in Hawaii and while deployed he has to put all of his belongings in the closet in his room which is then padlocked. He says occasionally they may have to let an incoming sailor sleep in an already occupied room for few days so that's why they put it in their closets. There is also a storage lot where he will leave his car this next time(he didn't have a car last deployment). And they do pay to ship thier belongings including 1 car to the next duty station. Hope this helps and best of luck to your son!!

Proudmom 77: The Navy should pay to move your sons stuff to his new duty station (I would assume they have the same options as married sailors). In terms of his belongings while on deployment, single sailors don't usually have too much stuff in their barracks, as their rooms are only so big. I know when my husband (boyfriend at the time) lived in the barracks, other than clothes, he pretty much only had a tv and computer. He just kept them in his barrack while he was gone but yes some people can do storage if they choose. Idk what base his is on but when my husband was in Kingsbay, the rooms were safely locked with keycard systems and only he had a keycard to his room and he was the only guy living in his room. So if he were to go out to sea, he was the only one with access and the key was on him. But yes he could store his things but the Navy will not pay for that.

Proudmom77, my son was told he could not leave his things in his room.  There were no guarantees he would be in same room when he returned from deployment.  Rooms in VA are hard to come by.   Some people are assigned to ships and they have to live barges.  I think it varies per base, etc.

Proud mom 77, Not sure about the Navy shipping from one duty station to the other for a single sailor.  My son took everything in his car.  He moved from CT to VA.  He did not have a tv.  We went to see his boat leave for deployment and drove his car home with all his stuff.  He still does not have a tv. We took car back loaded with all stuff at homecoming.  He did not move into barracks but into PPV when he returned.  I know some of the guys store their stuff with other sailors and some use storage units. But the navy does not pay for storage unit.   This is why most people recommend the sailors kept their personal items to a minimum.  Maybe someone else can address the move from one duty station to the other for single guys.
