Thanks, IDCmom#1. Yeah, I was very surprised they don't provide transportation. I'm tempted to start a shuttle service myself! I could probably make a mint!! Right now he's living on a barge at the shipyard, pretty much by himself, as everyone else is at the barracks. Tough for my very social son - but great for "social distancing"! :D

Sandy, I just asked my son if there were duty drivers to get the sailors or what your son should do.  He recommended that your son make friends with people he works with.  Also recommended your son not get drawn into the no $$ down car deals.  

I told him no duty driver stinks for young sailors   There has got to be some kind of transportation.  I’d suggest he become friendly with his supervisor and see if he/she has any ideas. 

Son just looked up the shipyard and says it’s in Portsmouth not Little Creek. He wondered if he is living in barracks at Little Creek and somehow commuting? He said if it’s because the barracks closer to his work are full, they will open up when the Comfort goes out.  

Over past 16 years, my son has been stationed in Portsmouth twice and Little Creek once.  They live in Virginia Beach.  If he wasn’t deployed, I’d ask him to ask around.

My son recently moved to Little Creek from GLakes. He doesn't have a car (who can afford one on entry level wages? Insurance for an unmarried young man is expensive), and he's having a really hard time getting around.  He's currently at Colonna's Shipyard. To go do some paperwork, he had to hire an Uber! Any suggestions for on/around-base transportation?

Happy New Year Jarj!

If you can afford it, buying a house for 3 years (or More) is not really crazy. You wouldn't be wasting your money on rent.

I understand that moving where you don't know anyone can be a concern and maybe a little scary, but we would welcome you to come over to our home and get to know us so that you would not be completely alone. :) 

If you go to our page on this site you will see that for the last 19 years we have opened our home to single Sailors as well as married couples on the weekends for food, games, movies and just getting to know each other. 

If you both will be here, when your husband goes on deployment, we would be here for you!

Thank you Yvonne for taking time in responding and to your husband, thank you for his service. 

I like the idea and I might take into consideration about buying a house in VA and selling it if we have to transfer to a different duty station. The only concern is if it is a 'right and smart thing to do'. Buying a house and living in it for maybe 3 years is crazy, I think. lol. 

I also agree that being together is important. I would like to move to VA with him but the main concern is safety since we don't know anyone there. Don't get me wrong, we get that there are a lot of military family who were once like us, who were new in a very unfamiliar place but are able to adjust and nothing bad happened.  Also, I don't want my husband to worry about me while he is out for deployment. 

These are just some of the many things I am thinking of.

I am the wife of a retired Navy Chaplain. Just to let you know the age difference. lol. :) 

We know of couples who have bought houses where they are stationed and then were transferred to another base in another state. And even though they had a property manager, the renters did a lot of damage to their home. Which cost them much money to fix all the damage. If you have a good reputable property manager, who keeps an eye out for the house and the renters you may be alright to go ahead and buy in Tx. 

However, the turnover here in VA with the military is great. You would be able to find a house here and buy it and then if transferred you could sell and make a profit as well as use your BAH for the mortgage. 

I have no idea what your situation is where you're from and if you have family who could watch your new home and be the property managers themselves, which would be a plus for you. 

This is just an opinion of advice like you asked. 

Pros- you would have a home to come back to when he gets out. 

Cons- Your home would no longer be 'new' to you after others have lived in it; 

If you're thinking of staying where you are and not being together, I would strongly advise against that. It's so important for husband and wife to be together in the same place. He may have to go on deployments, but that's part of the 'being together, supporting each other and being in each other's lives. There will be other wives whose husbands are on the same ship whom you will be able to spend time together and be a support to each other as wives.

Hello fellow Navy Wives, 

I need your advice!

My husband just got stationed in VA a week from today already. He is staying in barracks. I didn't move with him to VA because we wanted to get a house already. 

We wanted to get a house already because we wanted to invest early while we can. (Thinking that properties could appreciate in value in the next years to come). And as much as possible we wanted to maximize the use of BAH by using it to pay mortgage. 

With that, we may have a house but there might be less time he'd be able to go home because he still have to travel (from his duty station).

Another option is we buy a house, and if we plan to be together where he is stationed at, then we will rent out the house. 

Anyone, please advice or share any pros and cons.

I know it's been at least a year and a half since we 'talked', but if possible we would still like to invite your son over to our home. Did he ever respond to you telling him about us...?
