My son has now completed his A school at Fort Lee.  Class 060 Honor Class!!! Ryan earned the Hard- Charger Award.  Now he is at Groton, CT for submarine school.  Does anyone know how often they get leave from a Submarine?

That's very interesting Shannon...my son is feeling the same way. He just got to Groton after CS school and is not feeling that this is the way to go...

I'm not sure either about leave. I guess it's where they're deployed to and if they are docked for an extended time. A more 'seasoned' sub Mom could probably answer that question, djbrm.

Thank You.
Have you heard anything about graduation?  Ryan is saying it will be 7/1/11.  I would love to go, but need information and don't know where to find it.

Thank You.

He graduated on 2/24 and just got to Groton, CT 3 weeks ago?  Hard to track the time, due to graduate on 7/1/11 and I am playing he## finding information on the graduation to attend.  I have not seen my son since December.
Hi all! My son graduated CS school in Sept and BESS (Basic Enlisted Submarine School) on Feb 25. He has been assigned to his first duty station in Kings Bay Ga aboard the USS Rhode Island which is a sub. He got there in April and basically did odd jobs until his sub got back. Each sub has 2 crews, one stays on land while the other goes out. His crew was out, but now they have decided to send him out with the other crew which left today.
As far as leave, I heard when the sub comes in they get 2 weeks of "stand down" (I think that's what they call it) which is a 2 week leave. I think the subs go out for 3 months at a time, but I am not sure.
I went to BESS graduation and it was special, not like CS graduation. They make a big deal out of these submariners..Word of advice, if your sons, husbands do stick with subs, make sure they visit the dentist..all dental work needs to be done before they go underwater because it could be a source of great pain...my son had to get all wisdom teeth pulled and some cavities re-filled before they would let him leave Groton...ruined our plans, he had plane ticket for leave and had to cancel. so tell them to take care of it because no one will make them do it during school, but it has to be done before they leave Groton.
Thanks, My son no longer has his wisdom teeth so we are good there.  And he saw a dentist prior to going into the Navy and again at Boot camp, so we should not have any worries there.  Thanks for all of your responses, I a, learning more each day.
Hi CS sub moms!!! I am excited to find this group. My SR in have PIR 7/1 and then on to CS "A" school. I was really happy to hear all or part of it is at Fort Lee because we are only 45 minutes from there. Still wishing I had more information on what he will be doing and how long A school is. Also, I wish I knew when he will get leave. Any info I can get would be greatly appreciated!!!

Greetings zbmom,

Or maybe I should say "Hi neighbor"  -  We live in Chesterfield!.  My son is heading to CS at Fort Lee tomorrow.  He came home yesterday and will report tomorrow.   We too are thrilled he  will only be 40 minutes away.  He should be able to come back on most weekends unless he has watch..  His A school orders papers say he will be there for approximately 35 days.       His PIR was 1/7 but spent some time at another A school and then waiting to get to CS.  Much hurry up and wait but God has taught him much patience through it all.    After CS school he will also be going to Groton, CT for sub school.      Hopefully he will go directly there but there may be a gap time there too.  It is very hard to plan ahead on dates.     I hope you are going to PIR next week - it is a very special event.

Hi Val,

Yes we really are neighbors. We live in Midlothian! My SR wanted to join the Navy to travel the world but is now trilled he is going to A school so close to home after almost seven weeks of BC. We can't wait to see him next week. Our sons could very well see each other at Fort Lee. What a small world! Thanks for friending me. Keep in touch!
