Hi Navy family,

If you would like a chance to connect with others who have loved ones at Groton.. join us on the new facebook group, "Loved Ones of Groton A-School Sailors." The group is open to C-school folks as well!  Many of us have little experience with the way things work in the Navy. We are hoping others can share their experiences and knowledge with us in a more private (and easy to navigate) SNS.

Feel free to message me if you are having trouble finding the group on FB. I will contact you ASAP!

Hi Betsy,   I am Melissa my son is just arrived at Groton on March 4, 2012 just wanting to make some contact with anyone who may also be there.

Hi Melissa,

Our sons arrived at Groton on the same day, then! I don't know if you have a facebook account, but there are about 20 of us in this group that are Navy "bonding" and helping each other through this new phase of our loved one's training. It is a lot easier to communicate and navigate on fb than this site can be at times. We welcome you to join us!

"Loved ones of Groton, CT Sailors".. I will send you a message with more details.. :-)  Betsy

I am trying to be added to the group my son is in Groton and I am new to the group.

Hi moms,

Its Yolanda from Orange CA, I dont do facebook but think of Groton as college, its a beautiful property. Then in between school they have to serve guard duty.  So they are very busy.  They will call you when they can but he/she will be tired. Our son just had his 3rd yr in the NAVY and sometimes it goes by fast sometimes slow.

I hope this helps, feel free to send me a message.

GOD BLESS OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS!

Thanks so much for the info Yolanda,   I did not realize they had to stand guard also.   Now I know why he says he has to have all his time to study.   I text him about 2 times a day just saying hi.   but he does not have time to answer.

Hi Yolanda,

You must be a very proud Navy mom!! I appreciate the info about Groton.. we are new to all of this. I'm going to send a friend request and then may come back and ask questions as they roll in.. I hope that's okay with you?

All the best to you and your family,

Betsy

Hi Betsy-I tried too & get sent back here instead of to the fb page. Can you give me a link or something?

Thank you!

Roz

Hi Roz,

If this link doesn't work, try sending me a friend request here on Navy4Moms. I can then friend you on fb and add you that way!  Thanks for your patience :-)

Betsy

Good Morning,

My son left for Groton on 3/17/12 - 6 hours after graduating boot camp at Great Lakes.  I have not heard from him, except before he hugged me goodbye that he was on hold for 2 weeks.  I know very little about this life out there.  I would welcome any kind of information.  I did not get a chance to give him his cell or anything.  So I am in limbo again. Help from anyone would be great.

Thanks so much

he should be able to get you his address soon. There were base-wide exercises this past week (yanno, like hospitals do the mass casualty exercies?), so after that's calmed down he can get you the information you want to send him things.

Groton is a beautiful place; that's where my hubby and I got married. The climate is similar to that of Great Lakes. Being on hold is common from my understanding; they wait until there's enough Sailors there to make a class for BESS (basic enlisted submarine school). In the meantime he'll be learning all the procedures, protocols, etc. for the base. In the downtime, Sailors fresh from GL often feel lost, because they went from people constantly yelling and telling them what to do...to having free time to do something THEY want to do. That newfound freedom can be really scary. Just reassure your Sailor that things will pick up again soon.

How much schooling he has depends on his rate; my hubby (Matt) has been there since early December, and he's just finishing up the second school. There's two more for him after this.

Your Sailor will earn privileges such as being able to wear civilian clothing, staying out until midnight, and eventually earning an overnight privilege. They're cards of assorted colors--for the life of me I can't think of the colors right now! LOL. There are a couple places on base he can eat, there's a movie theater, bowling alley, the NEX (the navy department store), and Groton itself has a few other things (restaurants, a WalMart, etc.)

Your kiddo will be quite, quite busy for the first month or so, learning the ropes and his way around base. When he gets his phone, emails you, whatever his method of communication might be, just be aware it'll be brief. Matt and I send several little texts throughout the day when we have a chance, and even so there are still days when we don't get more than "I love you".

You can message me if you have other questions! I'm new to the Navy Wife business, but sometimes I surprise myself with how much I already know. :)

You should add the Groton sub school to your group. I found out so much from the ladies there. It really all depends on your son's rate. My son is SECF sonar, he arrived 10/30/11 and with another test to complete tomorrow and another qualification to complete he'll move to another dorm and start his A school next week. Which is another 18.5 weeks. They have BESS, then ACU, ATT, back to ACU, then TCNO(nicknamed the BEAST) by this time they have weeded out about 1/3 of the sailors. Some guys are only there for BESS. YOur son didn't have much time or liberty when he got there but by now he should be started with classes and pulling watch. You definitely should have his mailing addresses one for mail and one for packages.

Hi Betsy, my son just arrived at Groton on March 31st.  I would love to join the group; but was unable to locate it facebook. Thanks!
