My son just shipped yesterday.  I understand boot camp, but am so confused as to his potential career goal.  He went in undesignated but as pac(t) air? His description is that he gets to train and try different aspects then apply for a job.  The little bit of reading that i have intrepated means that he is stuck in a job (whataver) is available for a minimum of 2 years before he can even look at switching jobs.

Which description is correct?

He does undesignated PACT for one year or so, then "strikes" for the rating he wants and is eligible for.  He may even be sent to an A school if his command approves that. Once selected for a rating, he has to stay with it.

However, that applies to every sailor. Once you are designated, you cannot cross-rate for two years, and then only if your rating is overmanned and you are switching to an undermanned one.

Thanks!  He will be going to A-School in Pensacola FL for 4-6 weeks after boot camp.  He scored really high in the ASVAB and I just don't understand why he didn't choose or his recruiter didn't guide him to designate.

It's training, not "A" School yet.

I left additional info on your My Page.

Thanks.  Learning curve.

Have I completed all the changes required on the site?

You have taken care of the most obvious.

My daughter also went in PACT as well due to not many ratings being available when she went to MEPS.  She finishes Boot Camp on Nov. 21 and heads to Pensacola for the 3 week aviation training.  Could you tell me more about this?  This is all new to me.  Thanks.

This is a dead discussion from last May.

I left info for you on your My Page

There is a long wait for some of the rates, most are overmanned, and he probably wanted to leave right away, or the recruiter needed to fill some PACT spots and made it sound very attractive.  It is not the end of his world, but it is not the easiest path.  Hopefully he will get a chief in the fleet who can guide him to a good aviation rating.

Just sent you a message Emi.

cpcabe, sorry for the delay in my response.  I can only post from a computer and not my phone.  I would recommend that you join the Undesignated...whats up with that group.  There are several people who are moving through the same process as you.
