Anyone been on a Tiger Cruise?

I know this is coming a tad late, but we just returned from a Tiger Cruise. If you have questions I can help with, let me know. :)

LOL, I went on the Tiger Cruise over a month ago on the Oscar Austin DDG79. It was amazing, I learned a lot, I know more now about what my daughter and her shipmates go through, and now I am bursting with a kind of pride that I would have never dreamed possibly for our Navy!

We just got back from a repositioning cruise in Japan.  It was something to see as you said.  So proud of our men and women at sea!  It was amazing to be part of an active air craft carrier for 5 days.  HOOYAH!  I also came away feeling awful for the non-officer crew.  No place to sit and relax other than the galley, (which is usually not a leisurely meal).  They work 12 hour shifts then are forced to their racks with their computers.  Disheartening for sure.  Made me realize how important support from home means to them as well.  I watched them all scramble for mail every day.  I came away with so much, I will never forget it.

You are so right! My daughter is a CS, and I heard often enough that the CS's had the hardest jobs, because not only are the hours long, but it seems like fresh air and sunlight is highly limited to them, not to mention they enjoy the wrath and contempt from folks that long for the comforts of a home cooked meal, which won't be found on a ship! I can see where surprise packages from home filled with little goodies could brighten a day for a moment. And then there is that limited space to store anything besides a myriad uniforms and essentials. I guess that was why it was so eye opening when I thought about how many ships are out there with that many people going through that highly limited lifestyle (and then there are the subs Yikes)It is good to know there are so many support groups out there, because you know there are people on those ships who don't have anyone at all to send them anything.

How often do they have Tiger Cruises?

It is random, so you have to watch for your sailor to clue you in on it. I had heard that OA had not had one in 4 years, when this one popped up! It takes them a lot of work to prepare for one

Any wisdom you can share about a cruise would be greatly appreciated - like after the fact "I wish I had..."  or "I wish someone had told me..."

I wish I had packed lighter, consolidated more, and had more memory on my camera

This is know..... They will tell sailors that they will be working while even if they have a guest on the Tiger Cruise.  This is a lie!   The sailors that have guests get time off, more food, etc.  The Navy wants some good PR (They need it!) so they make the guests think this is how their sailor lives.   My adivce.... HELP YOUR SAILOR out, even if just for a few days.  GO on the Tiger Cruise.  Do not believe the Navy (what else is new?).  Your sailor will have good treatment (for a change).
