Gotta be honest, I'm having a hard time with this. We've always been very close, but he told me two weeks ago that he was signing up - turns out he had been talking with a recuiter for months. It was so out-of-left-field for me that I'm still trying to come to terms with it. Seems like I just bounce between wanting to cry and being so very proud of him.

Hi Grace,
My son leaves August 26th too! I understand exactly what you are going through. It's been very difficult and it seems like the days are just flying by right now -and my emotions are all over the place. He will have his birthday during boot camp and I have never missed a birthday.... :(

My son just turned 21 Monday. I'm glad he was able to have his b'day at home. It's good to know there are other moms out there feeling like me. None of my friends understand why I would be upset - they keep telling me about how proud I should be, and how this is such a good thing. I get that and I am proud, but I'm sad too. I'm so sorry you'll miss your son's b'day. Maybe you could celebrate before he goes to BC?

Yes, we do plan on having a party before he leaves! I'm glad you were able to be with your son on his birthday! I'm sorry your friends don't understand, do any of them have kids in the military? I bet if they did they would be understanding. It's hard, for me at least, it's moment to moment. I tend to hold onto a hug just a bit longer and don't even get me looking at baby pictures!!!

Hi Caligal123!  My son left yesterday as well.  Emotions = all over the map.  Just thought I would shoot you a note since ours are in Boot Camp at the same time.  It's so nice to connect to other Moms going through the same!

Good to know it's not just the surprise that has me on this emotional rollercoaster!

The same situation in my home.  He's dreamed of this since Jr High and signed up in December.  So I've had a long time to prepare and I'm really excited for him.  But I've been unusually emotional since graduation last week.  I've got a feeling the next few months will be a mess.

58 Days Left.  Wow!  We've been talking about this since October and now I'm running out of time.  He just graduated from high school a few weeks ago and took a trip to Savannah.  There's a huge family party for him in 3 weeks.  After the party I plan to focus on getting him ready.  We are going to go through everything in his room, box what he wants to get rid of, clean under that scary bed, and dig out the closet.  Right now I'm fine.  In an hour I may be crying.  It's been so emotional.

I am so glad to read how so many of you are going through the same "mix" of feelings I have been experiencing.  My son also leaves August 26th.  Looking forward to all the support here!

How time flies! Only two weeks left until he heads to the hotel. After my inital reaction, things settled down and we spent the summer going about "business as usual" at home. I just can't believe how fast the summer went! Now we've done everything but tackle his room. I'm so proud of him and excited for this new chapter in his life. He had about a week where he was anxious, but he's back to being excited.

12 Days Left.  My emotions bounce all over the place from hour to hour, but his head seems to be in the right place.  Tonight we are going to pick up a couple calling cards and activate them, put together a small list of phone numbers and addresses for his wallet, and start on his room.  I dread this part.  It's going to be so emotional.  I'm thinking of waiting until he leaves, and just locking myself in there to do it alone.

I offered to do it after my son leaves, but he said no. He wants to help. Plus, he plans to get rid of a lot of his stuff. He's a bit of a pack rat and still has notebooks from high school, etc.

This room has been a work in progress.  I should have condemned it his Junior year.  But we've sorted through what mattered to him, all his cross county and wrestling stuff really.  A few papers and pics from high school.  Weeded out the school uniforms and clothes that didn't fit.  There's a lot more to do but I can't anymore.  It's too hard.  In a few weeks I'll lock myself in there and finish it.
