While I’m new here to Navy For Moms, I thought I’d share my day today with other mom’s who might understand why all the waterworks.

Copied from my facebook page:

So, I have to tell this story because what happened today has humbled me and awed me and left me not only speechless but weepy as can be. Everyone who knows me knows that the baby boy is currently in Boot Camp in Illinois, at 17, a month before his 18th Birthday and he left the week before mine and that I'm missing him madly and wishing he were here.

Everyone also knows that today's my birthday... lol

Ok, so that being said I'm not sure if everyone knows exactly where I work, and the clientele I work with.

I'm a Registered Nurse and I work for Job Corps, I teach low income, disadvantaged (street kids mostly) students 16-24 yrs old to be Nursing Assistants. The kids that we get are tough, full of attitude and thick skinned, not the star pupils that every instructor would dream of for sure.

Well, these kids totally amazed me today, they brought me to tears not once, or twice but three different times, each time amazing me and humbling me more.

I walked into work this morning to my kids sitting around as they always do, listening to their music and talking with their friends. I had some interactions with some peers and was standing in the lobby with my BOSS when one of my kids hollared out *Ms Suzette* rather loudly, I said yes??? She hollared my name again... I laughed a little, raised an eyebrow and said yes ma'am what can I do for you? this young lady then proceeded to scream "Happy Birthday" in her loudest voice 3 times in a row. No sooner than I got her to stop screaming a group of students, (mine and some in the other trade classes) were standing behind me and in unison started singing Happy Birthday to me (about 15 kids) before they were finished singing I was surrounded by about 50 kids all singing to me. Yeah, I was teary eyed and at a loss for words.

After regaining my composure we went to the class and all was normal until right before lunch when they decided to hand me an envelope, yeah, they'd all signed the cards, believe it or not I was okay until I read one of the things that one of my boys had written... inside that card this extraordinary young man wrote "I Love You Mama Thank You for everything I thank God for you. Happy Birthday"... yeah, I teared up yet again from that as well as all the other endearing and loving comments these rough and rowdy street kids had put in this card. And yet, they still had not finished surprising me.

This afternoon we had a talent show scheduled for the entire Job Corps students and staff. We all filed in, found our seats, and were waiting to begin. The DJ's (students) started announcing the *talent* and the *judges*, we all clap appropriately yada yada, then all of a sudden they are on the mic calling for "Ms Suzette" .. I shook my head no, and they called for me again... I finally got up, went to the front of the gym and then the entire student body screamed (255++++ kids) Happy Birthday to me... You better believe I cried.

It started out as a hard day with me missing B something fierce, and while I still miss him madly those beautiful talented, loving, amazing young men and women at the rough and rowdy Job Corps center have shown me their hearts and have helped me to remember that there are so many young people who need to be loved and who will so willingly give their love...

To my student who Thanks God for me, I thank God for all of you as well!!!

(Yeah, you better believe the tears are just a flowing down my cheeks right now)

What an amazing day and an amazing group of young people!
