Hoping to create a discussion thread for parents of recruits that left in January of 2015.  My daughter left this past Monday, so she has been at GL for 1 whole day now.  Yesterday was an emotional roller coaster.  Today I am full of pride and realizing the true meaning of "No news is good news".  I can not wait to hear from her, but I also know how determined she is to get through basic.  I know it is not easy and our children are probably stressed beyond any limit they have ever experienced.  I would love to connect with other parents of children that have left this month and share this experience with them.  Plus, knowing I am not alone is comforting.  Hope to hear from you all soon!

Worriedmom, my daughter called from GL Monday night letting me know she had arrived and the box was on its way back.  My son left last month (PIR 2/6) so this is not a completely new experience but my son was not living at home (and he is married) when he left.  It is much quieter here since Monday but I do still have another daughter at home.   The nest is emptying.

Wow 2 kids in RTC, that is wonderful.  Were you emotional with the daughter leaving?  yesterday, I wasn't sure anything would take that weight from my heart....I'm telling myself that they probably were able to get a full night of sleep last night and that eased my mind some.  Really trying not to think about what it is they may be going through on an hour to hour basis.  With your son being so close to being finished, do you have any insight on 'what' our daughters are going through this week?  I just can't wait until she gets assigned a division and I can start receiving updates.  I really hope that this fleet of girls are looking out for one another and keeping each other lifted.  I went through basic YEARS ago, but that is what helps...the comradeship.

Overall, my son is enjoying the experience and told his sister that she should not be worried.  He is having to work on his running time but he is enjoying the food and has lost weight (a good thing).

The first week my son said he wore sweats and was not allowed to exercise since he was being processed.  Boredom was the issue since he no longer had electronic devices to distract and take up time.  So the girls are probably bored and being forced to listen to their own thoughts this week.

My daughter had roommate at the hotel Sunday night.  Her roommate did not get to swear in on Monday because she found out she was pregnant at the MEPS screening.  I'm glad our girls were not derailed so early in the experience!

Thanks for that information.  My mind was starting to do that wandering thing again, and you just put me back at ease!  Thank you!

I was browsing this site and was reading about the BS test, I have to admit I teared up.  That phone call of "I'm a sailor" is going to make me burst into happy tears!!!!  8 weeks to go, 8 weeks to go....

That is definitely a story to share!  I cried the week up to the 2nd swearing in.  I have to admit at that 2nd swearing in I was beaming with pride, although her older sister cried.  I did okay, until I got the text that she landed in O'Hare...I had to let the tears fall.  Then the next text, "headed to GL, love you" I couldn't barely stand it.  I didn't sleep the first night, wondering what she was going through.  I didn't receive 'the call' wasn't sure I could handle it, so she opted to call her older sister.

I am so anxious for that first phone call or letter that I will receive.  Yet I have decided that the wait for the contact is better then a call that something is wrong.  I saw a great post (on this site) that I am going to share with my daughter:

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers they will not sweep over  you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior..."  Isaiah 43:1a-3b

I found that very comforting this morning and I hope my daughter does as well.

Let's all get through this together!

NightCrawlerMom, please share your updates as you can...I'm very anxious to know what is going on and how these future sailors are doing :)

My son arrived in GL last night. It has been hard on us especially his young sisters, they cried themselves to sleep last night. I am proud, sad, excited, scared, anxious etc. Can't wait for the day I fly to GL and see him in his blues !
Hope to have contact with other mothers as well.

I share all of those emotions with you!

Mine flew out Monday as well. Got the phone call late Monday night/early Tuesday morning. Waiting on the box and letter now...

It's always good to be in contact with those who have kids freezing like your own.... and if anyone hears of a kid that showed up in shorts... he's mine. *sigh* When I got to MEPs Monday morning I couldn't believe it, but he was, orange hoodie, Patriot's beanie, and shorts... that's just how he is... he's never experienced that kind of cold, born in Jersey, raised in north Louisiana (since he was less than a year old) (=

I figure the "box" will be our first milestone, I can't wait for the form letter to get the address and PIR date.

Way too cold for shorts! :)  My daughter had on thin pants and no socks with her shoes.  I guess they just know better than us...

This really will be such a GREAT experience, and to know that they are joining the less than 1% that will ever defend our country is just WOW!

I have been told that the food is really good.  I sure hope so!

I wonder how they sleep, how long they sleep, is she crying herself to sleep...

Then I think of how proud of herself she will be at the end.

How was the call?

I saw a picture on the RTC FB page of how bundled up the recruits are, it's kind of funny, yet sad.

@ LaruaCam I can tell you that Monday (when she left) and yesterday (her first full day) I was full of tears and sadness.  Today is much better.  We will see what tomorrow brings!
