I just wanted to give some information on our experience with the whole leaving for BC.  We had alot of the details thanks to this site!  The main snag we hit was we thought all of the family would be able to go to the gate with him while he waited for the plane.  We are in Arizona and just a heads up to those with the same plans.  You can go to the airport and meet him there but you will not be allowed to go to the gate.  I was a little disappointed because his parents, myself and my daughter(his wife) were all planning on going to the gate.  As it turns out they dont allow anyone to go down.  However, I was able to get his wife to be able to go with him, which was great cause they had some alone time the last few minutes before he got on the plane.

Other then that little bump in the road, everything else went pretty smooth. MEPS was great to us and showed us what we needed to do when we got there and how to find out when his plane leaves. It was also nice because we got to sit with him till he sworn in.

Now waiting for the box and form letter!  Cant WAIT!

It all depends on the airline and if the person on duty at the time considers a recruit to be on orders--they should, but not all do. See http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/military-personnel-injured-.... Gate passes may be limited to immediate family members only in accordance with TSA regulations.

The person at the airline counter did say they didn't consider him going to bc as deployment but she did allow my daughter to get the pass. I really want to be able to have his parents go to the gate the next time he comes home so thanks for the links! Might need to use that in the future.

It will never be an issue if he is in uniform when he flies, but there will be times that he will fly and will not be in uniform due to where he is flying to or because he wants to be comfortable when flying. His wife and parents should be able to wait with him if he goes with them to get the gate pass.
