The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Thanks Joanie, what about Tyler? It is always wonderful to stay in touch and hear how everyone's sailors are doing. Gary T.
Tyler's doing good...stationed in Gulfport, MS...about 2 1/2 hours from home...Currently deployed to the desert since April...coming home in a couple of months. He loves being a Gunner's Mate....he made GM3 this month also...he's moving on up.
Congrats to Tyler! Nick just called yesterday. It seems the NAVY is now sending him back to San Diego for another C-School. I guess they want everyone on the ship to be trained in all areas. One more month in California. I told him too bad we didn't know, I would have left his car out there. Gary T.
Oh no Gary.....a whole month with no car...how will he ever manage. He must be doing great with Navy training...more C-school... congrats.
Hi Joanie, congratulations to Tyler! I'm sure you will love having him home soon. Michael has arrived in Hawaii and is currently living aboard ship along with Nick Twardowski. They have become good buddies. He is hoping he can soon move to barracks on land. He is missing having a vehicle, but I bet he will live through it. He, too, has made GM3. He loves Hawaii and what he is doing in the Navy. Sorry I am not on here too much any more, but will play catch-up from time to time. B-Z to Tyler. Hugs, Vee
Thanks Vee...congrats to Michael too....I'm so thankful for all of you....you are great encouragers.
Thanks, Gary, for covering me on this one...You are a great friend! Vee
Well Joanie, hopefully he can take leave after he completes the school. I know it will be much cheaper to fly home from San Diego then Hawaii. Told him to plan ahead and make sure he checks into it. Gary T.
Hi Guys, checking in and updating and looking for info. It has been a busy week for Brett during underway. Started the week qualing for DC. Passed. Had to qual on the M-16. He was top qualifier so he now has to coach and supervise all qualifying M-16 exercises. His Chief selected him to serve on SBS duty and his Master Chief assigned him to qualify for VBSS duty. Along with his regular duty on VLS, Brett said his head is spinning with all the added duties but finds it exciting and said it helps the time go by quicker. He said he has no time to think about being away from his wife and daughter.
Any body else have their Sailor get this kind of added duty. Seems a bit much to me. I am wondering if this is the norm. I will check in and update soon. Godspeed to our Sailors.
Hi Bill, long time, no hear. Sounds like Brett is moving up nicely. I haven't heard if Michael has done any of this, but have asked him to let me know. Also, has Brett had to undergo the OC training yet? Take care and HAGD. Vee
Hi again, Bill....Here is what Michael told me briefly in a message today about the above:
DC=damage control
And the others involve special ship's training for ship's readiness and tactical boarding when boarding another ship at sea for inspection. I know his ship is going out for a month or so soon, so he may be going through this, too. Good luck to Brett....Vee
Hi one more time, Bill...Michael just told me that he does have to go through the OC training, and will be taking the SBS and VBSS shipboard classes....Hope this helps...Vee
