Hello Everyone! I have a few questions about A school for CTN in Pensacola. But I will give you a little background first.

My husband will be leaving for school in Pensacola next month. He got picked up for CTN. We have been a part of the Navy life for a little over 2 years now. My husband joined later in life than most guys & gals do (We are both early 30's) and he also joined undesginated, which is not the wisest choice.

There are pros and cons to everything I guess but being undesignated is rough! For us what happened was as soon as boot camp ended we moved from South Carolina to San Diego, CA and he immediately left on an 8 month deployment. Whew! That was tough but we did it! :-D The good part of this deployment happening so quickly is that my husband was able to learn which jobs he liked and didn't like on the ship. What has been really hard is that he can not rate up until he gets picked up. That's hard on pride and wallet! But I have to give major props to my hubby! He did great while deployed earning his ESWS, a letter of recommendation, letter of appreciation and a NAM. His paperwork was completely messed up which is why he was not being offered any jobs with a school. Once everything was fixed he had many jobs he could choose from and he already has an associates degree in computer science so he chose CTN. We decided instead of moving our daughter again for a brief time to Pensacola we would stay in SD while he went to school.

I am wondering if anyone can give some insight to how the school is there? What is the average time it takes to finish, I have read numerous postings here and there sometimes there is a wait for classes to begin etc. We have six months but does it usually average out to something longer like 8 months? Also, he will be gone during the holidays, does he get time off? And this might be a tricky one, but family is actually in South Carolina, could he go there for the holidays or would they only allow San Diego? Also, how long before he will have liberty for an entire weekend? I know this is not boot camp but I know that liberty is still strict during school, especially since he will be living in the barracks. Of course my husband doesn't mind at all because he said the school is challenging so he is going to have to spend all his time studying i'm the one that's worried about him. And finally, where do people get stationed. I love SD, and would love to stay but not sure we could take up residence here if he is CTN? And how soon can he begin looking for stations. Some chief told him sometimes in school they will let you know towards the end and move the family there, etc.

Thanks so much to all who reply! I really appreciate it! And Go Navy Hoo-Yah! :)

Welcome to the group. Here is a link to CTN and it says school usually takes about 6 months. http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/navy/a/navyctn.htm. But then again there may be a wait before it starts. Depends o how many are there for class. Being your husband has been in for 2 years he may be able to bump someone just coming from BC. I believe my son saying something about that when he was there. My 1 son is CTM the other is ATI. So they both have been to Pensacola for school. There is down time during the holidays. And they do have a certain distance they can go without getting an out of bounds chit. He can also take leave during the holiday and go home but he just has to put it in as soon as they allow. My oldest traveled to Oregon on leave and my middle son Jacksonville. FL. as we had moved. But both had to get the out of bounds chit.

As for a weekend off they have 3 stages for liberty. 1 is they can't leave the base and have to be in uniform all the time. 2 they can leave base during the day but have to check back in each night at a certain time. 3 they can stay out all weekend. But do have to check out and back in.

Good luck with your husbands school and congrats on getting a rate. He will like the one he choose. Mine loves being a CT. Even the youngest is talking CT when he gets out of school net year.

@navymom3 thank you so much for replying, I really appreciate all the answers. I am happy to know he should get a break during the holidays. Our plan is for our daughter and I to fly to South Carolina and meet him there. I was just nervous because San Diego is our home address and didn't know if they would fly him to South Carolina (if they even fly him). Either way I am just happy he gets some time off.

That is so great your son enjoys his rate! I am very excited for my husband, he's been waiting so long!

Do you happen to know anything about the stations that CTN's normally get or know of any that people favor over others? Just wondering where we might end up. We love San Diego, but I don't think we will be able to stay.

Thanks again for all your input! I really appreciate it.

there are lots of discussions on here I would check them out as I think Craig has that somewhere. If not just ask in the general area and he will answer. And they wont fly him home he will have to pay his own flight. they only pay when they are flying on orders.

gotcha, yea I have posted this question in other forums and have gotten a list of different stations some have had to choose from. Like Ft. Meade, Ft. Gordon, Suffolk, and Richmond. I don't mind moving of course, I just like to research the areas because we have a 10 year old daughter and just want to check out schools, area, etc. We probably won't know until right before he graduates so no biggie :) But thank you. We figured he had to pay to fly home but I would rather to pay for the plane ticket than not see him at all like the the deployment we went through :-D Thanks again for your response!

If you do facebook there is a page for CT's most are in school or have been in school. Here is the link. https://www.facebook.com/groups/139944302845885/

Craig may ask you a few questions before he lets you in. You know the OPSEC thing. It called Cryptology ~ CTI ~ CTM ~ CTN ~ CTR ~ CTT ~ Corry Station Pensacola Florida

Just looking for an active CTN group on N4M.  Good to see this one.  My son has been doing quite well in his school in P'cola.  We really enjoyed having him home for Christmas, but planning the days of vacation home, or even just requesting the leave has been mysterious and a bit choppy.  I hope his next assignment, when he now has, will be smoother and unifying for his new group.

I am new to the group as my sailor will be reporting to A school for CTM in a couple weeks.  He has been stationed in Norfolk as undesignated for 2 years.  I am looking for information on the first couple of days when they first arrive at A school.  Thanks for your help in advance.
